Its a piece of railroad rail made into an anvil. I have one also, its a little longer with a point on one end. Pretty handy, because you can take it to what you're working on.
 
Wouldn"t that be cut from an end of a rail? Holes in the ends were used to bolt them together in the old days, before they switched to welded rails. IIRC, 3 holes per end, and a heavy tie bar bolting them together.
 
I have / or had one ? was mostly used for a door stop over at dads place. I can't remember if it got left there or if I brought it over to my place ?
 
Got one about 3 feet and one about 8 feet long use both of them. Make a substitute for an anvil. By the way they have not broke yet either.
