Wife just called and said dryer is dead. I know a lot of people like speed queen on here. Any recommendations

My BIL called me to tell me his dryer was shot. I went and lifted the top, a wire had burned off. Took me about 5 minutes to fix the shot dryer. Unplug your dryer and lift the top and check it out, wires can burn off, I've seen element wires burn off so no heat. If it is an element they can be replaced cheaply. Remember it could be something simple

Guess I should say it about 15 years old and 7 of us so it gets a workout. It been making alot of noise so I figure motor is shot. Looking to get at least an 8 cu. Ft dryer.

Do a couple simple checks first. Door switch is a common failure. There is a thermal fuse in the back that can fail. Check to make sure the vent is clean and no lint present. On electric the elements/overloads can fail. On gas the ignitor. I guess I really should have asked first , how old is it. It may not be worth your while.
A new one I would look at Whirlpool, they have always been good to us.

Assuming it does really need to be replaced, look at LG. Consumer Reports rates them high. We just got a LG Washer. It sure is quiet. Paul

The motor for a whirlpool dryer I recently fixed was 75 over the net or 100 at a local electric supply. The same motor is used on many different machines. It takes about a hour to replace the motor.

That dryer is used to dry 3 to 5 loads of towels a day, at a dog grooming shop. I’ve replaced the motor, belt, the impeller, the heating element 2x. And door switches. In about 20 years. YouTube has some good videos on repair.

couple years ago we chose a GE dryer. Nothing too fancy other than super capacity and auto sensing dry. No problems so far. It replaced a Kenmore/Whirlpool that had bad sensors, drum rollers, and timer. The timer alone was half the price of our new dryer.

4520bw,
I'm a big fan of whirlpool dryer because of its design. The heating element is in a metal tube, easy to replace, and IMHO a very safe design. No way can clothes come in contact with the heating element. Close dryer fires are a concern.

I bought one used Whirlpool in 1977 when I bought my first house. It's still works. Had to fix it a few times.

A few years ago I bought another whirlpool for my other place from lowes. I like lowes, free delivery, set up and I always get my money's worth buying their extended warranty. The new whirlpool appears to be built the same way my used 1977.
