Daylight saving time

None. Either the lights are turned on in the morning, or the lights are turned on in the evening. Either way, the same amount of electricity is consumed.

People have told me it is all about longer summer daylight for the golfers !

Me I'm of the split the difference crowd to 1/2 hour and then leave them alone !

Probably not much these days but back in the day of kerosene lamps, when just about everyone was a farmer, it did.

In reality, it probably causes more energy consumption.

At least in my case it does.

When I get off work, and it's still daylight, I'm going to be out doing something, which will mean I'm driving somewhere, or running some type of equipment or tool.

That will most likely consume more energy than me coming home and watching TV and going to sleep.

My self I wish they would leave it on saving time and stay that way. To me it make more sense because one would at least have some time after work to do a few things. Say you get off at 5pm so by the time you get home it is dark so you have to do chores etc. in the dark. If they left it on saving time then you would still have 30 minute or so to do things

A school bus company owner told me it is better to pick the kids up in the morning with a little brighter sky.
They are home before dark anyhow.

> Not much, I'm sure - but how would we know when to change our smoke detector batteries?

I find it easier to remember to change smoke detector batteries on Jan.1 of each year.

There sure is a lot of energy wasted whining about it! It was determined a long time ago that it was the
right thing to do, get over it. It doesn't matter much now that we're retired, but I liked it when I was
working. The days get so short in MN that I just worked 7 days a week mot of the winter anyhow. The change
happens at the beginning of deer season so we are getting up much earlier now anyhow.

The great plains Indians said " Only a white man would cut a foot off the bottom of a blanket and sew it to the top and say they had a longer blanket "

When it's clear and the sun's just coming up it BLINDS you driving toward the east, nothing safe about that. When the time changes it means dealing with it more.

The battery in your battery power wall clock too. Change them once in year in the fall. The other battery that needs a change is the heating system thermostat. Nothing like about mid February coming home to a 38? house and it is almost zero outside. You can plug in any temperatures you want. Just don't freeze the pipes!

How can an hour make a difference? You wasted an hour of
your life worrying about it. Let us know what your electric bill
looks like at the end of the month.

not true--there are far more people awake at dusk than there are at dawn--so the energy savings is substantial by having more daylight at the end of the day---the dept of energy estimates that billions of kilowatts are saved

Good advice on the thermostat batteries!

My parents house sat empty for a while - nobody thought to change the thermostat battery.

During a good cold spell, the battery decided to die - eight old cast iron radiators burst.

Absolute nightmare.

IMHO one more time change is needed. Since the world is getting smaller and smaller I suggust using Global Mean Time (GMT) (ZULU)
rather than having time zones or daylight savings time. Then everybody would be on the same time. You then can set you work hours to what
ever you want/need and NOT mess with the clock.
Personally I hate DST. Ben Franklin has been credited with the concept. I just have one question about that. Did he come up with that idea
before or after he was hit by lightning while flying his kite?

Well without DST, it would be dark at 8PM in the middle of summer for most of us in the USA, and light at 4AM.

I know, I know, just get up earlier and go to bed earlier, but most people are hung up on the numbers. You work a regular job? They're not going to let you work from 5AM to 1PM when their business hours are 9AM to 5PM, and customers are expecting you to be there during those hours.

If we left it on DST, it woudn't get light until 9AM in the dead of winter for most of the USA. Regardless of what you think, we're all affected on a primal level by the presence, or lack, of daylight. That hour of daylight before business hours gives us a chance to "wake up" and be ready for customers.

Daylight savings time may not save any energy, but it is lot safer for the kids getting on school bus! The daylight hour earlier helps. It is worth it!

I wish DST was permanent......It sure was great for us that worked a day job and farmed after work..

HUH?? While on DST, it is still dark when the school busses go by here in the morning. Now that we are on standard time, it is already daylight when the busses go by.

Which is safer, school busses running in the dark, and kids getting on those busses in the dark, or kids waiting for the school bus in daylight?

Currently, the school busses, 2 of them, pass our house at approximately 6:50 am. The sun is not yet fully up, but it IS daylight.

I am pro DST almost wish it could be year round but I get the kids standing at the bus stop in the dark.
For the people that complain about changing their clocks twice a year. Please do not travel to states in different time zones we would hate to hear you complain about how changing your clock ruined your
vacation.
