I bought a used 6 inch craftsman bench grinder 39 years ago and
it was old then. Damn stink bugs got inside grinder and end
switch would close. I took it apart and Wires are so brittle it
time to retire it.

I want to buy an 8 inch dewalt grinder. Do you think I should
wait for a black friday deal on Amazon?
dewalt 8 inch

Well YELLOW doesent make it better than green or red, or even gray.!!! Look at the specs., and compare. HF now has some really good "in-house brands that are far better than their old Chicago Electric branded tools.

King,
I already have an 8 inch 3/4 hp dewalt grinder at my workshop.
I need to replace the grinder at my pole barn.
Sorry, I like my dewalt tools. They have given me decades of good service. No regrets.
I bought a grinder from HF and returned it.

I would get a Jet but that's me... They are in the $270 range but the real deal... My 10" 1 1/2 HP china grinder I brought at a yard sale 10 years are so ago bit the dust I replaced it with a Jet 10".

It was tuff to pay out $500 look on the bright side I am going to leave someone a nice bench grinder...

If I ever get time I am going to try and re-power the china 10" it should not be that hard to press the armature off the shaft cut a slot in the housing for a belt to pass thru and rig a pulley up. Then power it from a external motor....

Sir George, I am refering to their new Brauer and Hercules brand tools. They are far better than the old Chicago Electric bargan tools.

If your heart is set n a Dewalt, then go for it. Myself, I'd watch Craigs List for an 8" decent brand used grinder and put the money I saved into a couple of good grinding stones. The Dewalt is made in China, just like the HF stuff. If you really want to have that yellow, go for it! Seems most everything is a risk these days.

I checked my craigslist. They wanted more for a used ones than I
can buy new dewalt.

I don't like buying used tools or used vehicles.

might try a local motor repair shop and see the cost to fix your old one. I had my porter cable mag drill rewired and new bearing for like 50 bucks.

What motor shops?
Back in the 60's Terre Haute had over a dozen motor shops.
Only one left is for commercial motors.
The grinder was full of Damn stink bugs that prevented the end switch on the motor from closing.
The Dewalt grinder doesn't have an end switch. It's a shaded pole motor, slower start. So it more Stink Bug proof.

Good chance this grinder is about 50 years old. It's time to retire it.

Who know, Santa might bring a new grinder.

there is a real good shop in Columbus. They do all of our motoring dyno repairs. Never had stink bugs cause problem but the Asian lady bugs sure do!

I know this don't help you but I found this one in the dump. I've got it redone up to this point, still need to put guards on it. It's an old United States Electrical Tool Company grinder. From what I can find out it was made in the 30's or 40's. 1/4 hp motor but weighs about 40 lbs.

I bought one at Lowes last summer. It was the only one on the floor and the box had a little minor damage to it, so my brother and I opened it on my tailgate in the parking lot just to check it out. Both wheels had a pretty serious wobble spinning them by hand. I took it back in and told the returns clerk that they were welcome to plug it in and fire it up, but I sure as heck wasn't going to.

They brought the guy from their tools dept over for an opinion and when he saw it his eyes got big and he just shook his head. He went and found another off the top shelf and got it down. Its box was undamaged. We opened it up and lo and behold, exact same wobble. He started fiddling with it to check the washers or something but I was already done and asking for my money back. They actually didn't want to give it to me. They wanted to give me a card with store credit instead. I became pretty 'not happy' at that point and it took me demanding to see the store manager before they issued a chargeback to my card which took a week to show up.

I never did get a new 8" bench grinder yet. still hoping to find a decent 8" grinder in that Dewalt's price range.

I do still have an old Wen 6" grinder that I've had for 10 years now. It's weak but has never given me any problems other than usually leaves me wishing I had gotten around to getting a better one. I think I paid under $20 for it more than 10 years ago.

I should add that it's the one and only time Dewalt has left me disappointed. I've always been a bit of a Dewalt fanboy. I've owned a Dewalt 18v 6 tool combo, 3/8 & 1/2 corded drills & reciprocating saw, belt & orbital sanders, and a rotary cutout tool and more I'm sure I'm forgetting for at least 15 yrs now (all were pre-y2k purchases before the wife came on the scene to limit my tool budget) and they are all still in good working order and ready for more abuse. The only Dewalt power tool I was able to wear out so far was a 3hp router that was a workhorse and saw MUCH use before the time came it needed to be replaced.

More recently I've bought a 20v 4 tool combo and I even bought several Dewalt air tools they came out with not too long ago & they had a sale on them on Amazon (1/2" impact, cutoff, air hammer & die grinder) which are not anything great but I've used them and they do work ok for their asking price.
