How much lead is in batteries electrolyte

Some people say they have dumped electrolyte and added acid to battery.

Is there any lead in old electrolyte?

Where would you safely dispose old electrolyte?

Just wondering about lead contamination.

Electrolyte = Simple water added to a battery to top it off resulting in a chemical reaction. Even a human body needs elctrolytes to function.

Any water that comes into contact with lead will aborb some lead.. Reason that it is illegal to use lead pipe, connectors and solder on drinking water systems now days.

Check with your local auto repair shops. A lot of them will take automotive chemicals. May also check with your local Solid Waste people. They will let you know disposve of it.

There is only a residual quantity of lead in battery electrolyte.

I have absolutely no concern regarding lead contamination of used battery electrolyte and have more than once leaked or dumped it in graveled areas of my properties in decades past without effect. FWIW, when dumped in grass covered areas, the grass returned within a year or two. Dumping CaCl on grassy areas will prevent grass growth for much longer. BTDT.

If you are really paranoid, you could neutralize the acid before doing whatever you chose to do with it.

If lead was that bad of a problem in water then one would think that much of the water here in Missouri would be undrinkable due to having a lot of lead in the ground here. There are/where whole towns named for lead like the town of Lead Mine MO which as the name says where built due to mining of lead

It's my understanding that the electrolyte in wet cell batteries is a certain percent of water and acid which changes with the percent of charge in the battery. If you change the electrolyte you stand a very good chance of not getting the right percent.

I've dumped CACL before and had grass back in less then a year. I'd bet it has to do with rain fall etc. More rain means the CACL does not last as long in the area

Leadwood. Leadington, Park Hills, Bonne Terre. Fredericktown Viburnum, Farmington. Mine.LaMotte, Mineral Point. The were mining lead here before the Revolutionary War. Missouri lead was used to make the bullets for the Colonists. Mine still running at viburnum

Ever hear of Flint Michigan??

Ever hear of Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act??

(SDWA) establishes the definition for “lead free” as a weighted average of 0.25% lead calculated across the wetted surfaces of a pipe, pipe fitting, plumbing fitting, and fixture and 0.2% lead for solder and flux. The Act also provides a methodology for calculating the weighted average of wetted surfaces.

[b:99a17ec0f0]The Act prohibits the “use of any pipe, any pipe or plumbing fitting or fixture, any solder, or any flux, after June 1986, in the installation or repair of (i) any public water system; or (ii) any plumbing in a residential or non-residential facility providing water for human consumption, that is not lead free.”[/b:99a17ec0f0]

The ancient Romans would put nasty wine (acidic) in lead containers to age. It made the wine taste good. Only problem was it made the people who drank it crazy and eventually killed them. I wonder what people 500 years from now will think about us putting our food in plastic.

Electrolyte in batteries is sulfuric acid. Your biggest concern should be disposing of the acid rather than its lead content.

Call your local hazardous waste dept and ask. It can vary widely jurisdiction to jurisdiction what is what and how to safely dispose of it.
