Srihl 046 chain saw

I was looking at a friends 046 saw. It was given to him through a friends father. He couldn't get it to start. Pulled the plug it has fire but weak, dribble a little gas in the carb after putting the plug back. Nothing after 8-10 pulls. Pulled the plug replaced it with a known good plug shows great spark. Dribble a little gas in the plug hole. Not so much as a puff. Pulled the recoil starter and put a half inch drill motor on it no love. The drill was spinning it pretty fast but the decompression button never came back up. I had not used it when trying to start before. Fast forward today got my compression tester out, it had been hiding for a while. Compression release activated it has around 50 PSI deactivated around 70 PSI. Any one have a ballpark number on what a good running 046 should be. I had read before that a compression test is hard to do on small engines but still wondering. I pulled the muffler to look at the cylinder and the piston. Not pretty, some deep score marks on the piston as well as the jug walls. I think it has lost so much compression that it will not fire what say you.

Compression in a 2 stroke is iffy when using a gauge. Was the throttle open? Wasit turning fast? I think almost any engine will at least pop if it is getting both fuel/air, and
spark. Jim

Angle Iron ,If the cylinder wall is scored it has compression loss.Try a 1/2 teaspoon of motor oil down the plug hole and a few drops of gas and try starting with a known good plug and no compression release.

Hello Angle Iron,

90# or better. You can put a teaspoon of oil in it, and spin
it over with your finger in the spark plug hole. Then
spinning it again let the oil out. A squirt of gas
again and reinstall the plug. You might get lucky. It may not restart though. Sounds
like the piston and rings are worn out,

GUIDO.

O46 should be around 125 to 135 cold.. Minus about 10 to 15 psi when hot.

Be worth rebuilding for a Cylinder kit that includes the cylinder, dual port muffler, decompression valve, spark plug, gasket set and oil seals runs around $150.

Piston and ring set around $50. If the cylinder is not damaged and within specs.

Note > > the 046 and MS460 use them same cylinder and internal parts.

A scored cylinder is not good, but it should at least try to make some effort to run, but 70 is pretty low if an accurate test.

Did you check the ignition timing? I fought a Poulan this week, no attempt to start no matter what. Got to looking, the flywheel key had sheared and turned 180*. Firing at the bottom of the stroke!

had wondered about that, the key looked ok yo me.

e has it at his house now. I did a little looking today on ebay. No idea of the quality but I found several kits from $49.00 up to around $150.00 and all in between. After market no dought. I even saw a long block for either $169 or $179.00 again aftermarket. He has many saws and said he will park it for now and look further this winter.

should say though that I did not pull the flywheel just removed the nut and looked. I should have gone further on retrospect.

HLSupply sells the best aftermarket cylinder kits that I have ever used. I have never had any problems out of any of the 25 or 30 Hyway kits I have gotten from them.

I was given a 365 Husqvarna and have plans do use a Hyway or Meteor 372 cylinder kit to make it a " big bore" saw. But has been on the back burner for about three years now. Maybe this Winter..
