I have a 170 stihl that I gave 179.00 for new and I see them on ebay for 179.00 plus shippimg all the way to pert near 300.00 are they different or better?

Just different sellers. And in some instances, the same seller can have multiple ads, but with different prices.

I shop around between Amazon and eBay (when internet lets me), but usually find better deals on Amazon for what I'm looking for. Other times, can't beat eBay for a deal. Just depends.

New Stihl Chainsaws sold on Ebay??

That would make me a little leery since Sthil says their products are "only sold at authorized dealers" and no mail orders allowed.
================

But yes Sthil, Husqvarna, Echo and others dictates the price of their products. A big box store or dealer can not charge more than the price they set.

No, Stihl has basically 3 levels of saws, Homeowner, Farm/Ranch, Professional, top handle tree saws are pro saws too. The model number stays at one size and one level of saw, no two saws share a model number, level or size. The MS-170 is the smaller size of Homeowner level saws.

I bought one years ago, little guy, 16" guide bar, Ford dealer; was also a Stihl dealer. Was on sale. Liked it and wore it out. Couple of years ago bought another 16" but this one has the easy start and the easy tensioner for the chain. Very nice and it was from a farm and ranch brick and mortar store. I have had Poulan, Homelite, and a couple of others over the years. One of the things I like about the Stihl is that is idles as long as you leave it sitting by you and if you shut it off for 10-15 minutes or so, it restarts easily usually without having to choke it. My others weren't like that.

I hope chain saws are not created equal. There has to be something out there better than Stihl and Poulan. I used to have a McCulloch Eager Beaver which was great but they are unavailable in my area now.

PT Barnum said it best, suckers are born every minute. No they are not better.
Stihl sets the retail sale price on their products and the dealers have very little leeway. They also do not let their dealers sell new product on Ebay. That does not stop non-dealers from selling an "as new" or "never used" or what ever tricky wording, read the ads carefully. None of those sellers are Stihl dealers,, that you can take to the bank.
How they can sell for the same price as was paid at a dealer is anyone's guess? Stolen? Distressed freight? Took the free extra chain and sell the saw? who knows? The higher priced sellers play upon the fact that some people think that everything is cheaper on Ebay, it costs nothing to list and if a sucker comes along,,,,

Fact is if you can buy a new one for $179 at a dealer plus tax and get an extra free chain (most of the time) why would a person consider buying on Ebay???

Before replacing my Poulan Pro 20" saw that I have never liked since new I also looked at saws on EBay and Craigslist. I was stunned by the number of folks trying to sell used saws for more than you can buy them new at the dealer. You almost want to send them a message and ask if they are kidding or is this a misprint.

I have a friend that is a gun collector and he sees the same thing with people asking more than you can buy them new.

I don't get it. Bought 2 new Stihl saws and have been happy with both of them.

I don't know what Stihl model you had that made an Eager Beaver look good, but it must have been a doosy! :shock:

You are correct. Homeowner=$179, farm= $250+, pro tree guy =$700+. They are completely different saws. More power, more reliability as the price goes up. A pal that is a pro tree guy goes through a couple of small (pack them up a tree) saws every year at $700+. You can hear them 'bark' when working.
