life of a battery

I've have batteries that did not last a week and others that have lasted a decade or more. Seem to be no rhyme or reason as to why a battery last a short time or a long time

13 years is really good life for a car battery, but not unheard of. I replaced a 20 year old Sears Diehard Gold battery in my Super H about 3 years ago.

Yes.

The quality of 12 V so-called storage batteries has improved considerably in the past 2 or 3 decades. It is not uncommon for a battery that is not abused to last 10+ years.

Do not expect such live from 6 V batteries.

Had a tractor in storage the battery was a 25 year old 6volt Optima round cell jell filled. The battery charged up and started the tractor. But It would only hold a charge for three days.

I have been getting a lot more years out of batteries by put them on battery maintainer when setting.

just had one that was 14 years and three months and it was a fleet farm battery that will never happen again

I do the same as D Beatty and put my hotrod battery on a maintainer charger during the winter when vehicle is not used. The battery is now 10yrs old.

the 6V in my Cub is still going after more than a dozen years--probably closer to 15, and it might be older than that, as it was in the tractor when I bought it and any date codes are long gone. It's showing signs of weakness, but I can hardly complain, and it still starts the tractor--I'll see how it holds up next year and make a decision then as to replacing it, as the mowing season here in NY is pretty much over, and that's mainly what I use the Cub for.

I just found a slide viewer that I bought a long time ago. Had Double A batteries in it, said "best if used by 2002" They still work! Viewed a couple hundred slides or more.

(quoted from post at 15:14:06 10/13/18) I have been getting a lot more years out of batteries by put them on battery maintainer when setting.

I am a firm believer in those battery maintainers also, but I have experienced TWO 6 volt batteries that died while connected to a maintainer.

My sawmill battery is the one it came with & that is 1997,on battery number 3 for my 1980 Gravely tractor.Bottom line is big batteries in equipment that requires fewer amps to start last longer, no battery tenders or chargers used. If those batteries were sitting on shelf with battery tenders they would have been dead long ago.

guess its possible..temperatures, care, etc..I keep maintainers on most of my batteries in winter.. Feel real lucky if I can get more then 2-3 years on most. I had exide in all vehicles and barely got 2 years across the board on them. I just replaced a exide brand tractor battery in my john deere 3020 with interstate.. HOWEVER the exide was almost 5 years old.. Thats pretty good for exide..

Just removed the 12 volt battery from my TED 20 Ferguson , still works but is getting slow and loses a charge over a few months in Winter .
Originally fitted in 2005 .
