With the forecast for above average snow in Iowa this year, my snowmobile will be a useful tool for checking fence. The electric start ring gear is bad, but I cannot get the clutch off the crankshaft to replace it. I have tried everything except massive amounts of heat, which I think might ruin the crank seal and/or the aluminum block. It starts pretty good with the pull rope (I've ran it for a while that way) but it bugs me the electric start not working.

I'd be willing to haul this sled anywhere in Iowa, western Wisconsin, or southern Minnesota if I can find an experienced Arctic Cat mechanic that can fix it for me. Any suggestions? Thanks.
 
How far in to Iowa are I have a neighbor that could pull your clutch. He is about 25 miles north of Rochester.

I googled Arctic Cat 440 clutch removal and it took me to pictures and videos

PS I found silicone spray my snow mobile clutches best friend. Spraying it down thoroughly belt and all made it slip at idle and engage smooth as silk. Never slipping and no belt debris. Just accurate smooth operation.
 
I like the water method
he uses the bolt wrapped with teflon tape
fills the crank end with water then screws in the bolt
POP off it comes
 

I had a 1992 Arctic Cat 440 FC back in 1998. A crank seal gave out and it sure did run good for a half hour or so. I gave away a 1972 440 FC a few years ago. Replace the crank seals while you are in there if you haven't yet.
 
You need a Clutch Puller Tool. Picked one up at a local Suzuki dealer for less than $40 to pull the clutches from a Kawasaki SxS. You may find one at a local Auto parts store if you live in an area that has a lot of snowmobiles.

Just make sure that you use one that will fit your make and model.

Yep, ruined two of those. One cheaper aftermarket one and one $200 Artic Cat one. Tried the water freezing trick, no luck. Made a threaded fitting to hook up to a grease gun and still not loose. I don't "think" I've ruined the clutch threads but I wouldn't be surprised. I left the clutch bolt out and took it for a ride thinking maybe it would come loose under load, nope. It has been soaking with Kroil since last year. Biggest worry is I've swelled the end of the crank and made it impossible to repair. Ironically the sled has only 940 miles on it, it's a 2-up guide sled with two speed and reverse, it was top of the line at the time. Needed a big sled for ice fishing. Still a great "old man's sled" as my son calls it. His Polaris XLR is way too fast temptation for me.
 
your using the wrong puller the correct puller goes past the end of the crankshaft all the way in till it bottoms out inside the crank end, past all the threads if you have damaged the end of the crank you are pushing on the wrong place the proper puller is smaller then the threads so to bottom inside the crank
 
All you need is the proper pulling tool like shown below. Dennis Kirk in Rush City MN will have one or any cat dealer can get one. Once you have the propper tool just spin it in and use an impact wrench on it and it will pop right off.
