WIFI Expert Needed

Satellite source Modem to router via cable. WIFI transmitting from router. Put your WIFI ears on your computer and you see yours and any others operating within range.....another (neighbors) detected.

Your WIFI prompt (on your computer) shows your source with a lock as is the case with the neighbors.

Computer burns up allowable data way too fast. Disconnect WIFI and use cable from Modem to computer and usage goes back to normal.

If your computer has to have a password to access your WIFI, how is it your neighbor can use your WIFI and eat up your bandwidth?

Thanks,
Mark

Any devices connected via WiFi should be listed when you log into your WiFi router. Cell phones running Facebook are notorious for grabbing bandwidth; make sure nobody in the house has Facebook set to automatically stream videos.

I assume the router is supplied by your ISP. If you think it's allowing connections other than those from your own household, turn off the WiFi and buy your own WiFi router, running everything through ethernet from the original router.

I would bet that your not having someone use your system. You have some setting that has your computer/cell phone eating up band width.

If a neighbor was connecting to your wifi and using up your time, they could also do so with you on cable and NOT on wifi.

We're on cellular internet. In our house, the router/modem has to sit in another room in order to connect with the tower. Even though it's just the next room, I had to put an external wifi antenna on the PC in order to make a better connection between PC and router/modem. Otherwise, the PC would keep losing wifi connection and basically having to start over. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but the way Windows and their auto-update feature is set up, ANY time it loses connection, it has to start the download over again -- at least on this PC. I disabled auto-update and corrected that problem, but also have that wifi antenna that guarantees a strong signal between router/modem and PC.

...Now if I could just keep a solid signal with the tower!!

Did a little research regarding this problem. There's a program that has been recommended for someone else in trying to monitor their data usage. It's called Net Limiter (http://www.netlimiter.com/download.php)

Then something else popped into mind. Do you have any devices that automatically store to The Cloud? I never allow anything to The Cloud and will only store info on HDD's. Also, could your cell phone be connecting with your PC while in wifi mode?

Ads are hard when there is limited bandwidth. Consider turning off your images, or disabling all components that will auto-load images, video, etc. on web pages. Consider an ad blocker.

Ensure sufficient space on your hard drive. Try to keep at least 1/3 of your HDD space available.

Check for viruses and malware....although I doubt this might be the problem.

....If you use less data being hard-wired, why not stay that way??

Also open settings, see what is listed. Then if you call your provider they should be able to reset your system and assigne a new pass word. Next step is talk to your handy dandy computer repair dude. You might need to have your computer debugged. Neighbors smart arse daughter was burning mine. Comcast shut her down.

Great answer, and all the wifi protocol of sid broadcasting, and having to unincast vrs multicast also is getting pushed back into the modem.

I believe you MIGHT have a bridge at the modem instead of a router and that is allowing all the miscellaneous traffic to go out on the wire.

Also satellite connections are really bad about only allowing one mac address go through so that can really cause problems in the bridge mode with "no connection" but in your case, that doesnt seem to be a problem.

It's mine and hear you on the hard wire. We did realize the Facebook problem and got that fixed. Thank you.

After figuring out the Facebook streaming thing, still had excess usage. Moving from air to hard wire was the only change and it worked. Thanks for the reply.

Dial up was first here. Then a small company came in and offered ground mounted (local water tower transmitters) wide band. Too many things got in
the way and I wasn't going to put a lightening rod 40 feet into the air so we went with Satellite. Several companies, and years later, we are finally getting
reliable service (except for thunder storms) and late night (when I'm supposed to be sleeping) system servicing it's 100% and fast. Currently using Exede
and Dish.....was on the Dish system....The Exede is hard wired, no router. Thanks for the reply.

Would you explain that please?

Cable I mentioned is between the Imac and the Modem, bypassing the router. Router in same room with that computer, 10' away. Reason for using router was lap top used elsewhere in the house on occasion. Satellite supplies the internet service.

Using Ad Blocker, part of the Imac freebies and Apple's Safari browser.

Thanks for your time.

Let me add this -- [i:6789c0d1b6]as long as the wifi is still active[/i:6789c0d1b6] while you're on cable (router and modem still powered on), then a neighbor could still connect. It wouldn't require your PC be connected in order for them to connect. So if you didn't notice any data drain while hard-wired, then I doubt you have a problem with anyone tapping into your wifi.
