Drill Hog bits - good news and no news

Well, I heard back from Drill Hog about the varying prices between Amazon and eBay. They offered to refund $40 from my purchase. Wow! Unfortunately, no word on why there is so much price difference in the first place. That still has me a bit in shock. Also, there seems to still be a lot of mystery concerning this "business".

As per recommendations, I'm getting some Tap Magic; both the original and the extra thick, depending on the job at hand. Another perk from Drill Hog is that they also wanted to send me a sample of their own cutting fluid. Will be nice to compare it with Tap Magic, which I have also never used before.

So at this point, I see it this way - It seems Drill Hog sells some pretty good drill bits. Still not certain that "they" are the manufacturer, but there is definitely a lot of quality there for the price! But for anyone wanting to buy some of their bits, save yourself some headaches and look on eBay first. You'll likely save a chunk of change.

Drill Hog makes nothing, just another drill bit merchandiser that is playing on the wishes for magic drill bits. Neighbor brought his set over to impress me, got out one of my Norseman sets and same bits right down to the stamping on the shanks. They try too fool people into thinking they are USA made bits by deceptive advertising but they are not and no where does it actually say so, read closely. Attempted deception tics me off. Also they do not warranty them to stay sharp, that you must do. They only replace broken bits.
All that being said if they are the same as Norseman they should decent bits for the buck. Norseman is my general use bit around the shop but special? Nope. Just another decent quality bit for the buck.

That's what I'm figuring also.

Yes, doesn't seem right reselling another brand product as your own, but it's VERY EASY to see all the massive amounts of info that Norseman has to support their products. Drill Hog seems to only have it's advertising - nothing else. However, seems the Drill Hog bits are much lower cost than Norseman bits, so not sure how they're wrangling that to get the price so much lower -- $60 for a 29-pc set of M7 bits on eBay, vs. $85 to $100 for Norseman on multiple sites.

If Drill Hog can stay in business with the lower costs, more power to them, I guess. Is still better than buying the [b:5b9e62f7cb]cheap[/b:5b9e62f7cb] sets.

It is the same in the tire business.
Companies like Goodyear, Firestone, etc. have many lines coming from the same plants.
You want a well known famous brand you gonna pay more to get it.
Or pay less for a brand you never heard of but comes from the same plant and is just as good.
Advertising costs $$ and they have to recoup those dollars.

Wasn't it P.T. Barnum, that said " there's a sucker born every minute."? It pays when people DON"T shop around. Some people think that e-bay and amazon are the cheapest and or the most convenient place to purchase what they need. They may be able to do better at the corner hardware store. But they will never know, because they don't shop pricing. Different price structures for different venues does not surprise me at all. jmho. gobble

I tried to price-shop Tom, but was having severe connectivity issues with the internet for several days. Sometimes couldn't get connected for hours, and sometimes couldn't stay connected for more than minutes.

Otherwise, I fully agree with your post. Still, the difference in price on these bits from one site to another is a bit on the crazy side. A 65% price increase is a bit much.

Keith: You making it seem that the Company is crooked or something. Do you have any idea what the cost of selling things on Amazon??? I do not but I would bet it is quite a bit higher than EBay is. So your comparing apples and oranges.

I sell equipment. Some auctions charge me 10% commission. Other online auctions can charge as much as 25% with all the "costs" added up.

So on Amazon there maybe a single transaction fee that is a set amount. An example is one company I do business with charges me a flat shipping/handling charge. It is $12.50. If I am ordering hundreds of dollars of parts it is a really good deal. IF it is a five dollar carb kit then it is not so good. So a set fee would drive up the cost way differently than a set percentage would be.

I would bet the "net" profit is close but the actual costs are way different. Maybe not but we do not really know.

Correct, we [i:bb2a073bd8]don't[/i:bb2a073bd8] know. The point I was making is that I've never seen a company with such drastically varied prices for the same products. And keep in mind, just because I ain't seen it, don't mean it don't happen!

I don't mean to point fingers or downtalk in any way. I have my bits and am very happy with them. But without more available background, it "[i:bb2a073bd8]looks[/i:bb2a073bd8]" strange to have such widely varied prices, along with the other claims and lack of updated website, Facebook link, contact info, etc.

Are they a brick-and-mortar building? Can you depend on getting good quality merchandise? When you order from them, is your personal/financial information secure? (I know, I know...Amazon & eBay help insure it's secure) There's a lot of "information voids" that can make folks nervous. I simply wanted to discuss these voids; the price differences; others' experiences, etc.

Some small things in life can be just plain over thought about. They seem to be decent quality bits so buy a set and if you like them great. If you hate them then add them to life's lessons.

That's like the Oliver gear reduction starter being sold these days a couple of ebay sellers have them for around $100,but they can be found on ebay and at some of these parts sellers
websites for up to almost $300,just have to look around and compare.

You never know about drill bits I usually check ebay for NOS Hansen bits but my while my wife was working at TSC they discontinued the brand drill bits they were carrying so they marked them down a lot.Big set and some of the best bits I have ever used.

For drill bits the (on sale)9.99 set from Harbor Freight has worked great for me. I am ready to buy another set just to replace the lost and, a couple of small broken bits.
