Sunfire transmission repair

Got a '01 Pontiac sunfire that I use as a cheap commuter car. The transmission seems to be slipping. and stalling the engine at red lights. How big of job is it? Can I pull the motor and trans from the top or does it drop out the bottom?

it is probably the lock up torque converter not unlocking. You can unplug it and use it that way if so.

I thought of those cars as throw aways. Once the "car" has over 150k miles on it and something major happens, and the bill is over $1000 then it goes to the scrap yard. A friend of mine has a late 90s Stratus that is a heap, he put a new water pump on it and that was $200. 3 months later the head gasket blows. He is going to scrap it. It has almost 200k miles in it.

Common problem for the 3T40E

Easy fix. Replace the TCC solenoid assembly. tcc solenoid locks up and stay locked up at a stop sign and stalls the engine. remove the side cover and replace the tcc solenoid assembly.

picture would not print. remove side cover and replace the tcc solenoid. lower driver side powertrain cradle.

been awhile since we did any but they use to be an everyday thing when those cars were newer and still making it to the dealer.

Thanks, for the help. That sounds a lot easier than pulling the whole thing. It will be great if I can keep it rolling through the summer.

You can verify that the problem is the solenoid but lightly pressing on the brake pedal while cruising at highway speed. You should see an increase in engine speed as the converter clutch releases.
