Logan Lathe information??

I bought a Logan Powermatic Lathe 11" x 36" at an estate auction.
The machine shows very little wear with original good paint. I was reluctant to buy it but there was no other bidders
Someone was attempting to change the motor to a NEW 1.5 HP GE and I do not have the old motor and this motor is not mounted.
There is a variable speed on the Spindle drive and there is a variable speed pulley mounted on the replacement motor.
I am sure the base will have to be modified for this new motor, and I can do that, but I need to know how to alighn the pulleys.
Normally I would just use a straight edge but the two variable pulleys operate opposite each other.
The motor pully moves to the left and the driven pulley (above) moves to the right.
Any information would be appreciated.

No other bidders? What luck! It most likly had a 3 phase motor originally. Mine is 7x30 with 3 phase. Google Logan Lathe Manual. I got one from a guy somewhere in the midwest several years ago.

Logan lathes are still actively supported by Logan Actuator Co from Illinois. The grandson of the original founder owns the company now and is very helpful. Note Logan lathes are no longer made, and lathes are not Logan Actuator's core business, they only provide support for the product.

Here's their web site: www.lathe.com

There is also a fairly active Yahoo group specific to this brand.

Can you put a belt on and check if it's straight?
Sometimes on motorcycles the marks on the swingarm
are out a little and it's better to just eye ball it
to see if the chain is running straight. If you're
mounting holes are slightly bigger, you'll be able
to move the motor a little to align the belt. A dial
indicator could also work for aligning the belt.

If you can swing it, put a variable DC drive on it. Infinite speed range in fwd and reverse. I have a smaller logan, 6X24 and sure do like it. The DC drive just cleans up the whole motion problem.
