OT Electrical: North of the border sparky question

Been noticing quite a few new service panels installed laying on their side on the Holmes on Homes show. Why? Doesn't look too user friendly when you have to lift the cover and hold it open.

Can't say I've ever seen one installed like that down here.

Just saw one a week ago that was 'laid down'. It fits between the studs that way. It was a 'Square D' and measured 14 1/2" tall and nearly 18' wide, hence the unorthodox install. Never had seen one like it until this one.

I've noticed him replacing nearly every box he encounters. He'll replace a 48 space box because it's "overloaded" with 40 breakers. While that show is good, they seem to go a little overboard.

In the US, the NEC has a rule that the breakers may work horizontal and on/off may be either way, but if the breakers work vertical, then up must be on. This makes it impossible to legally install a breaker panel horizontal in the US. There is no such rule in Canada. Installing the panel sideways allows you to take advantage of the larger area of the sides to bring wires thru from "top" and "bottom", beyond that, I do not know of any good reason to do it.

I gotta agree that I can't see any advantage to that. Fits between the studs? Not a good reason, IMO. As for the show, yeah, I used to tune in now and then but tired of watching them demo EVERYTHING. Heck, it's not their money. Although, it is interesting to see some real messed up jobs.

Which border? I live near the south border of the U.S. You should see the electrical wiring systems south of our southern border - makes you want to run back across the border!
