Paint gun for tractors, etc.

Can anyone recommend a spray paint gun for painting tractors, equipment, etc.
There was recently an article in one of the magazines that stated you have to buy a HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) due to EPA requirements. This requires purchase of a new compressor, larger hoses, couplers, etc. This system is not the best for painting the underside of equipment as paint runs.

Can anyone shed a little light on this? I was thinking of buying a DeVilbiss or something like this for parts support, etc.

Thanks,

Bill.

If I was to start painting tractors again I'd seriously look at the self contained HVLP units I think TIP tools sells them.Campbell Hausfield too. I have never used one but would surely go and try one out.

i have used both, and i would go with the top feed gun, around $80.00 to $100.00 gets you a nice gun. make sure you get a good fit on the lid,i had one with a cam lock type lid and i must of over tighted it once and it leaked after that, the next one i got was a snap on type lid and have not had that problem. if you buy at a auto store ask about the nozzle size if you are going to shot primer and paint with the same gun.

I think that's pure BS in the magazine. Why would you need a new compressor, when all any compressor does is supply compressed air? Compressed air is compressed air. And plenty of places, including well known brands, still sell siphon feed guns.

That being said, I'd go with a good gravity flow gun, but that's personal preference due to the saving in material. A 20 ounce cup on a gravity flow gun will cover about the same area as a 32 ounce cup on a siphon gun.

The only thing I still use a siphon gun for is primer, and that's mainly 'cause material in a siphon gun is easily stirred up after the gun has sat for a coupla hours. (Or days). Plus, as someone else said, primer requires a larger orifice in the nozzle than paint or clear coat.

If you"re going to spray alkyd enamels, a cheap nockoff sprayer will work fine. If you"re going to spray automotive finishes it would be better to buy a better gun like the DeVilbis. I am a professional furniture refinisher and I started buying the cheap guns because employees kept dropping them and breaking them. There"s really not that great a difference in them. The better guns will atomize better which is needed for automotive finishes.

I have an old Devilbliss ,top of the line at the time. However for 9.99 you can buy a gun in Harbor Freight that will work fine. For 9.99 you can throw it away if you don't feel like cleaning it. Just spray a test pattern until you get it adsjusted. It would depend on how much refinishing you want to do. I would be more worried about respiratory protection.[paint only runs if you go to heavy].

well, its partly true. if you are a business, like a body shop ect that generates v.o.c's (volatile organic compounds, you need to be using an hvlp gun. for the hobbyist, a siphon feed gun is fine.

I use a gravity feed gun. Nothing fancy. Got it at Lowes or home depot. It was about a 130 bucks. I spray primer and paint threw it and have not had any problems. Painted several tractors with it including the sheet metal and they turned out great.

Early this spring, I bought a pair of guns, One is a regular size HVLP gravity feed, the other is a touch up.

Come in a kit with all th things you should need.

I believe they're made overseas, but it said "Starting Line" by DeVilbiss

I think it set me back about $120.00.. My uncle works as a paint/body man (and has my whole life).. He helped me get started, and said the gun does just as nice a job as stuff that costs a good amount more. I also asked about packings, tips, needles and the like.. At this time, they are available, and reasonably priced (but that could always change)

I bought disposable paint cups from Harbor Freight instead of using the cup that came with it, just for the sake of easier to clean up (yes, I reuse the disposable cups), and if they get too ugly, just toss it and put a new one on and go to town again.. They're see through too, but the paint don't settle off the sides quick enough to see when you get low though.

Here is a link to what I purchased: http://www.amazon.com/Devilbiss-Starting-Line-HVLP-Spray/dp/B0016L3KHM

I purchased it locally (where I have bought all of my paint and supplies), and at a savings to what it is listed for in the link.

just starting out?

go to a store and get a cheaper gun. tsc, lowes, harbor freight all have some cheap guns in the 30$ price range.

get one.. and an old car hood and learn on that, then if you want a better gun, invest in one.
