Kind of a Tool, Weed Eater question!

OK, I use a dual string think its a 30cc weed eater. Bolen I think is how its spelled. I just moved out in the country and my string just wont hold up here. I've seen those blade attachments like a Lowe's that have a triple plastic blade with metal guards, are they any count. Or does anyone have any recommendations for a blade on my weed eater. I do edge next to my drive and sidewalk. Just wandering sorry if no one wants to answer but I been getting good help with my tractor here so I thought I would ask.

Don't know what size string yours requires, but you can go with a larger size. The plastic blades work pretty good but if you hit anything solid with them they are gone! Was using one a few years ago and hit a rock, broke one of the blades, caused such a vibration I could hardly hold on to the thing. If you are trying to cut very large weeds you really need a cutter that can use a metal blade as well as a line cutter. Hope this helps a little.

I tried one of those triple blade heads once. It lasted about 10 minutes.

If you use a weedeater, you have to get used to it consuming a certain amount of line.

I changed to the red line. It lasts a little longer than the green. I had to drill the hole a little larger in the spool. I don't have much luck with the two lines, just use one. I wondered how the cutter heads would work myself. In bigger weeds, I spend as much time rethreading the line after it breaks as I do cutting.

Get the 3 pointed steel blade from Stihl. Got 30 yrs on mine & still going strong.

If your string won't hold up, your trimmer probably isn't up to the task, either. When your Bolens (aka MTD) gives up the ghost, get a Stihl, model FS70 or bigger. Use a string head around the house and a three-cornered Stihl brush knife in the tall stuff.

Get bigger line.I use orange line on a Stihl FS81 and have thought of going bigger. I also use a 3 point steel blade for anything bigger or if I want to get some weeds knocked down in a hurry .It won't look near as good as string but will last forever and work way faster. That all said, your only supposed to use blades on bicycle handle brush cutters(which the FS81 is) and don't recommend you do it. Other thing is, if your weedeater has a curved shaft, a blade could potentially tear that shaft up if you ever hit anything.
stihl 3 tooth blade

for my smaller trimmers, i switched to the husquvarna titanium line. lowes sells it, its silver-gray in color. works really well. last year i bought a stihl fs90r commercial trimmer. its an absolute beast, cuts just about anything with just the line, switching to the brush blade, it will knock down brush, multiflora, vines, and small trees up to about 3 inches in diameter.

I will second the recommendation for the Husquvarna Titanium. Good stuff. I broke down last year and purchased a Red Max trimmer. Don"t have the biggest they offered, but this one serves my needs well. Think I have 3 trimmers hanging in the garage waiting for repairs since we moved out to the country 8 years ago. Hoping the Red Max lasts a little longer than the others have.

Good Luck,

Kirk

Thanks this is some great info. Yes my weed eater is under pare it worked great in the city. It is the larger strait shaft of its kind. I have the biggest string I can fit in it at the moment. Like everything else I am throwing some extreme punishment on it. I to am spending more time putting string on the darn thing. I do like Stihl's Once this small weed eater bites the dust I will upgrade. For now I have it and it runs. Its two years old I am going to get my money out of it.
Thanks Again People.

I quit using string/line, and all the cr@p associated w/stringing it up, melted together, etc. Get a grass gator head and a box of plastic replacement blades. Do not get the plastic blades w/the serrated metal insert.

As someone else pointed out, if one of the blades goes blewie, the vibration is enough to shake the callouses off your hands.

HTH..good luck...don t. .....

I use my weedeater a lot here on my place. I have tried those plastic blades and other head attachments as I HATE the bump line heads. I found a replacement head at Northern that works great for me. I have also seen an infomercial for it. It is called Pivotrim. I use Sthil 95 orange line in it as it seems to be a little harder. I will get the titanium line when I need a new spool. I bought 2 more of these so I will always have one, but my first one has worked fine under lots of abuse for over 3 summers. I bought one for my two children to use too. I love it. Easy to change the line and the line seems to last forever-I trim around rocks, a stone retaining wall and lots of woven wire fence. I will never use anything else.

I gave up on the weedeaters. An application or two of glyphosate pretty much eliminates any need for trimming. I've even learned how to get right up close to the flower garden without killing the flowers.

Big weed eaters have like an over running clutch in them for using metal blades and maybe some of the other blades that might cause a torque on it. They may not work on yours.

So you like the Pivotrim? I seen that and did not think it would be any count. It did have some heavy duty string in it. I may pick one up to try. It was pretty cheap if I remember correctly.

I wouldn't use anything else. I'm going to try the titanium string next time but it works great on grass, weeds, poison ivey etc with the 95 string. Not too expensive either. You'll be glad you tried it.

don t-9n180179,

"w/stringing it up, melted together, etc."

If the sting is melting together - you will soon need new gears in the head over $100 8 years ago. (Stihl straight shaft big enough for saw blades)

You are not using #80-90 gear oil in the head as regular maintanance. - don't ask how I Know!
