Went for O/A cylinder refills on Friday. Cylinder (#4) of Acetylene at Praxair was $62 compared to a little over $50 few months back. Guy said it was because "they were importing the calcium carbide from Columbia". OK, I can understand that considering a major domestic producer was out of commission. When I got the invoice, there was a few dollar surcharge on it. I asked about that. He said "that's because they're importing calcium carbide from Colombia." Huh? Wasn't that why the price was higher in the first place? I suspect that when supplies become domestic again, the surcharge may disappear but that higher price may not. He said they were actually pretty reasonable with their pricing and that some places in the country it was going for $120 and up. Anybody else bought any acetylene lately?
