7018 Break test.

1/8-inch Lincoln Excalibur 7018, this rod has never seen the inside of a rod oven. Been setting on the bench in an open can. Took 18-blows with a 4-pound hammer to break the plates. Then I had to put the plates in the vice and beat the top plate back the other direction!

Now I know why professional welders like 7018 so much. That makes such a beautiful looking weld and it took 18 blows to break it. Around 4 times what the 6013 took. Is there any special technique to weld this rod?

Just jam it into the puddle and go. I personally move everything around just a touch, generally an up and down motion with fillet welds, or side to side motion on plate.
