drilling bathroom tile

old fashion tile toothbrush holder is part of a tile wall so I don't want to remove it. The holes are too small for modern-day fat handled toothbrushes. Won't take much to enlarge the hole. Anybody know a tool? Thinking of a ball grindstone in a drill. Drill bit would be too expensive, I expect. Special file?

If it's nice enough that you want to keep it, it's too nice to be trying to modify. Murphie'll prolly be watchin and waitin anyway. Just get toothbrushes that fit or carve the handles down some. I think anything you use with a motor (except maybe a dremmel) will vibrate and break it. Maybe a reamer and use it with your hand? Good luck with whatever you decide.

I know they make a grinding stone with some kind of diamond material in them.I used a hole saw with this "stuff" on it to cut thru my tile floor. It worked VERY well.

If it is glazed, any modification will ruin its appearance. Also grinding of the glaze will open the porous structure of the body and become rather unsanitary for use with toothbrushes.

agree, agree.

I picked up a diamond hole saw, believe it was 5/16 diameter to make some holes in my bathroom floor tile to mount the terlet. Best I can recall the bit cost about 8 bucks at bLowes.

I would agree that any attempt to modify the piece is going to ruin it. If you like the look of it, keep it for decoration and either modify the toothbrushes, or store them somewhere else.

The ceramic toothbrush holders are hollow, at least every one I ever hit with a hammer on a remodel was. I imagine that you would eat through the into the hollow space before you got the hole big enough with any sort of grinding tool. Just my .02
