My Mom's car (2002 Cavalier) has a P0440 code which I know is "evaporative emission system" which could be the gas cap. We have tried tightening it and clearing the code but it came back within a day.
I have read elsewhere that the gas cap itself could be defective but I am wondering what else could cause this. Vacuum leak?

Girlfriend had a 2001 Explorer that kept throwing a similar code. New gas cap didn't help and I could always smell gas when parked in garage.

Turned out the fill tube had a pinhole or two rusted in it.

I'd take a good look at all the emission lines coming off the tank for cracks, rot, or rust. If nothing obvious try a new gas cap.

Don't know about that SPECIFIC car, but have dealt with a couple of GM's where that code leads to a plugged (with road dirt) evap cannister vent valve/filter.

I had that. Turned out to be the pressure sensor on top of the fuel pump assembly. Had to replace the whole thing after dropping the tank. A lot of work and expensive, but fixed it.

My GM car has a solenoid dump valve in the rear by the spare tire. After a lot of frogging around, replaced it, solved the problem. Have had that problem again on another, same make model. Took valve off, cleaned it up, along with the foam breather put back together, problem solved.

Your evaporative emissions system needs to be smoke tested to determine which component or line is leaking. Gerard
