Chainsaw help

I have a Stihl 011 chainsaw that I bought in 1990 and ruined the clutch sprocket teeth on it after slinging the chain off(new chain and old sprockets don't mix!) Local dealer says getting replacement on saw that old not likely from Stihl. I found an Oregon relacement drum/sprocket online and ordered it. Saturday took off old sprocket, new sprocket diameter much smaller than Stihl, pitch is correct 3/8, gauge is .050. My question is, Do I need to get the Oregon bar and chain combo ($40) to make this work. Once I saw the sprocket was smaller, I did not go any further reassembling the saw. :x I bought a MS170 Saturday but I would like to fix this saw. I had already bought a new Stihl chin for th 011 before I took off the old sprocket.

The new one you got from Oregon is the newer style that the drive sprocket is a separate part than the clutch drum. You should have another part. It fits on the new clutch drum and the chain runs on the out side of it. They call it a rim.

Look at the picture I have attached the link to. It clearly shows the clutch drum and replaceable sprocket.

Tell your dealer to order it ftom Stihl. It is still available. Or better yet find a dealer who knows what they are doing.

AS JD stated there are two clutch types available for popular saws, spur and rim. Sounds like you got a rim type and you didn't get everything you need. You need to get the proper rim for your type chain. Its actualy a better sytem, next time its worn you just replace the rim instead of the entire clutch drum.

What I see right off the bat Jim is that the replacement from Oregon is only 6 tooth versus the original 7 tooth from Stihl, someone misordered for you.

There is no harm in running a 6 tooth sprocket, you'll have a little more torque and a little less chain speed. No special bar required.

Sorry Jim, I misspoke. It appears that Oregon only offers a 6 tooth sprocket for your saw. I doubt that you'll notice a difference in cutting speed if you use it.

I did a little cross checking Jim and found that the MS200T uses the same drum/sprocket as your 011. The 3/8 7T setup is part #1129-640-2050.

The Oregon # is 28016X. I am going to take the old sprocket to the dealer and see if they may have the one for the MS 200T that Jokers posted about. I ordered the Oregon before I took the old one off and just took it for granted that it would be the correct one. Thanks for the replies everybody.

That part number is correct according to the book but thebook says it should be six tooth. It is the same sprocket as a 020, ms200t and 009.
