Boat trailer conversion

I often see tandem boat trailers on craigs going cheap.Has anyone ever, say added square tubing to one and made it into a flat trailer?

Never done it, but because of the size of wheels, tires, bearings, hitch, etc., you'd wind up with a VERY light duty trailer.........opinion based on the boat trailers around 'here'.

Probably could be done if you did it the right way. In my area it is common to see a wide load coming down the road and it is a tri-axle trailer with a 30 plus foot boat on it. You would have to add a lot of frame and cross rails to it to be heavy enough for much of any load but the axles sure would be heavy enough

Anything is possible, just a matter of what you start with, what you want to end with and how much money you are willing to throw at the project. I have done two of these "conversions" but I got the trailers cheap, had all of the steel I needed and did my own welding. Otherwise, like I said, all it takes is money. LOL

You could do it, but the balance on them is different because the heaviest weight on a boat is way off the rear. This involves shortening the front and adding to the back to become a trailer. When I bought a 4 post lift, I took the 15' boat off my trailer and off I went. With no modifications, I plopped the 2000lb lift on it and it towed perfectly.

We used to get the boat trailer "conversions" showing up at the sod farm, we used to take bets, how far down the road they'd get, before the inevitable wreck, or blown tire!

You could make a good lawn mower trailer or other light duty trailer. Most of these boat trailers you see for sale cheap only have 2000 pound axles on them. You are not going to get a car or tractor trailer out of most of them.

I bought a 16 foot glass boat just for the outboard. Once I stripped the boat and hauled it away I painted the single axle trailer, fixed the wiring/lights and bolted one of those 275 gallon plastic totes to it. I have a hose reel on it and an agricultural sprayer pump mounted underneath so I can water trees and veggies in remote spots. I only put 250 gallons in at a time and it hauls just fine.

Good haulin"

I have a 4'x8' utility that used to be a boat trailer, not that you could tell from all the mods I had to do to make it practical. The axles must be moved forward and the tongue shortened to begin with. If you don't have your own steel and welder probably be money ahead just to find a used trailer that would fit your needs.
