Engine needed for log splitter.

Anyone know of a good on-line place to order a 9-11HP horizontal shaft engine that's not made in China? I was splitting wood with my Cub Cadet splitter and engine seized. Thanks,Jim

I've only bought parts (excellent service), but they also sell engines....Jack's Small Engines.

Also check......Small Engine Warehouse.

i have a China Honda knock of on my splitter and for 5 years it starts second pull just came in from splitting some Oak and it's -7 and it started second pull for 119.00 I'm sold. this is a harbor tool engine 11 hp don't be to fast to judge them China engines. you will not touch a Honda for under 700 or a BS

Be careful online. You can spend a lot more money for a name brand and still find out it was made in China. In a store where with physical merchandise you can see the tags but online you can't.

I know you said no "Chineese" engines but the Harbor Freight engines are a Cineese clone of a Honda. I have a 13 hp, electric start on my air compressor and it runs great, and almost as quiet as a Honda. Got it on sale and used a coupon for 20% off, got it for $260 ish after tax. You cannot buy a used Honda for that. Hell, if it blows, buy another and still be cheaper than 1 Honda.

Good luck,

CT

Thanks for all replies. I still looking but a Honda is out of the question as I don't use the splitter enough to justify the cost.

Anyone know anything about a BlueMax? Yes I found out it's made in China.

I used a 10hp Tecumseh engine on this splitter I built back in 1982. The engine was off an old Craftsman garden tractor. Never had to run the engine above 1/2 throttle. With the two stage pump it would just shear the knots. Hal

just a wild idea but is there any way you can mount a hydrauic pump, and run it off the deck pulley on the garden tractor engine?

As for the suggestion to run a pump off the
mower deck pully:::Most small "Woodsplitter"
type hydraulic pumps have only bronze bushings
and ARE NOT designed to be side loaded, such as
with a belt drive. If the belt was to be tight
enough as to not slip under load, the bushing,
life would be drasticly shortened.
A belt drive hydraulic pump has ball or roller
bearings, and the price is far greater than that
of a small single, or a 2 stage "Woodsplitter"
pump.

My buddy bought the 6 horse from harbor freight with a 27 month
warranty, it was around $130 or less. Seem to run great, has lots of
power.

You may well be right, but I cut around 8 cords a year to heat my house and garage and I'll bet the splitter only runs 6 hours or so all year. I suspect it would still take several years to wear out anyway.

You may want to check craig's list for items like pressure washers. I've been tempeted to buy some items just for the motor. I purchased a 3700 psi pressure washer with a 13 hp honda for $450. The washer works great. My experience has been that pumps don't last very long. I've seen new pressure washers with 13 hp honda's sell for a $1k with free shipping.

I still vote for a Harbor Freight Electric start 11 or 13 hp engine. It will last almost forever at 8 cords a year.
