Copper Pipe Cutter - Not tracking straight

Does anyone know the geometry of why a roller wheel type pipe cutter would not track straight? I have 3 cutters, 1 is a mini and about 75% of the time each of them will not track in a straight circle but instead thread itself along the pipe.

Any thoughts on correcting this?

It is getting worn out and sloppy. I have been able to work with them but you have to be careful how you spin it around the pipe make sure you are not pulling it to one side. Otherwise they are cheap purchase a new one.

IMO,Either your tubing is not round ,or you wanna cut to fast and flatten the tubing as you turn the tool instead of letting the wheel cut in a bit at each revolution.Or the knife wheel is bend or sloppy on the pin.

I never had no problem with any of these type of cutters in steel or copper tubing

I have a cheap one that does that. The only way I have found to keep it straight is to roll it only about halfway in one direction and then roll it backward for the other half. Do this until a good groove is in it. Then it should cut fairly staight.

Those minis, even the good ones will do that. I used to plumb and used Rigid cutters (pretty decent tools). When you use the mini, don't cut in the same direction when you get it started. Work it back and forth (both directions) and watch it when you work the full 360. Once you have the groove established it won't wander.

If you have a full size cutter doing that, something is wrong.

I like that technique have to try it next time.

I usually just use real light pressure till I have a groove started. The tubing has to be straight too to cut straight.

I used to use big Ridgid or Reed cutters a long time ago, whenever they quite tracking we would get a replacement cutter wheel and that solved the problem. Probably not an option on cheap, smaller cutters.
