Computer started acting weird last night so I went to do a system restore and it won't let me do it.

I can go into system restore and pick a date for a restore point, but when I hit "next" to confirm the restoration date it just sits there on that screen doing nothing. From there I can go back or cancel, but it will not continue with the restore.
Anyone with any ideas??? Thanks.

It's possible malware has corrupted your system, but not a given. You don"t say what version of windows you're running, so here are some possible fixes. Below assumes you can access the internet and/or download files & install software in the computer"s current state.

Try running system restore in safe mode. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

No go? Try downloading and running malwarebytes. I"ve used this for removing bugs with a lot of success. It includes some base signatures without having to first download an update. Will run circles around SpyBot and AdAware.

For some really tough ones, I"ve had success with this software as well.

Thanks for the help. Safe mode won't let me in to restore either.
Downloaded malwarebytes but it doesn't seem to want to run.
Superantispyware starts to download for about 2 seconds and then I get an error.
It won't let me run defrag either.

This is XP.

After you click on "next", be sure you give the computer plenty of time to churn away--maybe a minute or more. This is a long shot, but worth trying.

Finally got superspyware to load and run and now things seem to be back to normal. Thanks to all. :D

Good to hear.

SuperAntiSpyware is set to run in the background by default. You can modify it's properties / preferences from the ladybug in the taskbar and set it to not start with windows - allowing you to run it only when needed.

I would go ahead and get malwarebytes to run just in case there are any remnants of the bug that caused the problem. Often these programs will find bits and pieces the other misses. Failure to remove all of the badware may allow it to reinstall itself.
