Hydro Oil for a skid loader

I have a John D model 70 skid loader that I got cheap. It's basically sound, but it needs a thousand details tended to. One thing is the hydro oil- it looks like there's water in it- it's milky pink.

The owner's manual calls for [b:395c2d3892]John Deere All Wheather Hydrostatic Fluid [/b:395c2d3892]or equivalent.

What's equivalent? Are there different types of hydraulic fluids out there? I'm sure the price of the JD stuff is  ! I'm looking for a less expensive fluid that meets the requirement 8) .

Related Question: This thing is almost 30 years old- is there some kind of additive I could put into the hydro system to recondition the seals, etc. (it seems to be working ok as is)?

What does Deere require the oil weight to be: For instance--10W-40, or Sae30, or heavier.

I think that as long as you use the right oil weight/viscosity you should be okay. All weather means that it works in the Winter/summer, it wont turn to thick syrup in the winter and wont burn up in the summer.

You need fluid with an EP additive to protect the hydrostatic units. Case allows you to use an EP hytran fluid or multi weight motor oil if you ad a ZDDP zinc containing EP additive (TKO fluid ??) Do NOT use a plain non detergent non ep hydraulic oil.
Your operators manual should list an API number or letter spec for the JD oil, make sure what you use meets or exceeds that spec.

(quoted from post at 14:53:15 03/29/09) Your operators manual should list an API number or letter spec for the JD oil...

Remarkably, it doesn't! Even more remarkable, I have the official factory tech manual here and [b:9de311ab68]even it [/b:9de311ab68]doesn't say anything about it other than calling it "John Deere All-Weather Hydrostatic Fluid".

Thanks for your info- I've been a truck mechanic in the past, but I know nothing about hydraulics. So even thoughI still don't know exactly what I should put in here, at least now I see that any old stuff won't do- I've got to be careful in my selection.

An online search found this, that old oil type is obsolete and has been replaced by JD hy-gard.

Low-Viscosity Hy-Gard replaces the John Deere All-Weather Hydrostatic Fluid and should be used as a direct replacement for all applications .

check the link below.
new hudrostat fluid.

I use the Hy-gard J.D. oil in my 3020. And bought a 1840 Case Diesel 3 years ago that I use the hy-gard in. No problems.

Jon- Thanks so much for that link. I'll go back and check it out in detail.

Buick- Yes, it's all in one. The only thing separate is the parking brake, that uses brake fluid.

MSS3020- What color is this stuff supposed to be? The fluid in here is pink- could that be right? I wonder if he put some transmission fluid in it...

The oil has to be wet clutch compatable. And there are various levels of friction modifiers depending on the brand & application.
Safest bet would be to purchase from the local JD dealer.
