Gasket Removal

I am 4 hours into a 90 minute water pump replacement on my truck. I have finally gotten the old pump off and am in the process of removing the gasket from the engine side. Of course it is in a recessed area underneath the alternator and a/c condensor and next to the idler pulley.

I am not planning on scraping this all off as it is stuck on really tight (148000 miles will do that) and I would be there for days. Does anybody have any favorite products or tips they would like to share?

Probably needs to be clean now, and easier to do. I once changed a water pump on a International 966 missed a spot of old gasket and had a leak. I then had to redo everything, including about a 60 mile round trip for another gasket. You bet your sweet biffy I get them clean now.

Sorry, but thats part of the job. I have found that a good paint stripper will soften most old gasket material thus easing its removal.

there is a spray for that that doesnt work so if you see it save your money.I use aluminum stock and sharpen on belt sander. You can dig in without damaging underlying metal.

stop over at napa and pick up an aerosol can of spray gasket remover. we use it at the shop, works good, and a plastic scraper will get the old gasket off without scarring up the aliminum surfaces.

Back up plan - last time I looked, "Chisel" gasket remover was getting real scarce.
Easy Off Oven Cleaner is a decent substutite. It's not a fast as the real stuff but it works and doesn't damage the metal surface...can't say the same for paint and skin surfaces, though.

A die grinder with a rolox disc works. You dont want to leave gasaket material that could cause a leak.

You need to get it all off and clean. Roloc discs on a die grinder are quick and easy. The oven cleaner trick with a good scraper will do the job. I have a scraper with a carbide edge on it. Works unbelivable on cast iron. Have to be careful on aluminum. I think the name of the company that makes it is Innovative Tool and is in Cedar Rapids Ia. Best $25 I've spent in a while.

get a new gasket and save your self the time in the future of having to re do it

Go to the auto parts store and buy some gasket remover. It will melt the stuff away and all you'll need to do it wipe it off.
