Echo Chain Saws

Mornin' All.

All this chainsaw talk got my brain working.

Around the farm we have a few different saws, and have over the years. My grandfather always had a few Echo saws that he used, usually one for felling, and one for limbing. After he passed we moved to one Stihl and one Echo, and now all the Echos are gone and we have a Jonsered and a couple of Sthil.

Ive always been happy with the Stihl saws, but the Echos always seemed to be good too. Yesterday I was at the Home Depot picking up some lumber, and I noticed that they now sell Echo products. Has Echo changed into now a homeowner brand? Before they used to be a top tier sorta brand, and Im just wondering if the quality has gone down or if they still make a good saw. The ones there said they were made in Japan (I was specifically looking at the 400), which is better than China.

Any thoughts?

Echo is still very good and has been made in Japan forever. They like John deere etc use home depo and others to sell product (mostly homeowner grade) I believe today that it is not like the past where they sold junk and got a bad rap. Some sell husqvarna too. Bear in mind ther is a difference between professional/commercial and home owner saws trimmers etc.

I once had an orange colored echo chain saw (model 650). Best saw I ever owned. Don't know about the new ones. I very seldom use a chain saw any more. Back when I had the 650, my brother had a 750. The 750 was a hemi. Twice as fast, but also twice as heavy as the 650. It had a high pitched whistle, kinda like a turbo. The 750 was a very powerfull chain saw.

If there"s volume you can bet that the companys are cutting corners wherever they can.

Take a look at the selection that Bailey"s has. I discovered these folks when looking for blades on my Cub Cadet lawn tractor.

Interesting catalog (free) geared for loggers and arborists. I would bet that you can"t buy a low grade saw from them.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I was worried that what the Depot had was their "homeowner" grade saw, and I do know that sometimes its a good name slapped on a lousy product, sometimes even one made by another company just so they can compete in the low cost segment.

Not that Im a big fan of shopping at the big box stores for something like this, but they might have a deal there somewhere.

That link to Bailey's actually had the saw that I was looking at yesterday, the Echo CS-400. I noticed the big "clearance" tag on it, and it probably wouldnt be too bad to pick up for the $240 they were asking for it along with the 18" bar. But its a smaller saw, good for limbing and some moderate firewood use I would think.

You won't be happy with a saw from Home Depot I wasn't I have an older echo CS3000 profesional arborist trim saw very good saw.I bought a echo 3500 from HD piece of junk ended up taking it back.I'd stick to a small engine shop if I was you for a good profesional saw.I ended up buying a sthil ms460 with a 25 inch bar good saw under a $1000.

I've got 2 Echo saws..Smaller saw is CS-346 with 14" bar, bigger saw is CS-400 with 18" bar...I am absolutely tickled with both easy starting , light to handle saws..Just sold my Homelite Super XL-925 , heavy , hard to start, nugget dropping saw after 32 years of service..

We have an Echo saw. I'm not sure of the model number, but its an 18in bar. It is good running, easy starting light weight saw, just a little short on power. Had it checked out, and everything is ok. It will cut half the bar ok, which makes it a good limbing and brush saw. With a sharp chain you almost have to lift on the saw to keep from stalling it.

Just got a professional Husqvarna saw and love it. 24 in bar, plenty of power and is one of the fastest running saws on the market and it cuts FAST. Kinda heavy though and ear muffs are almost a must. Coworker just bought a 455 Rancher Husky from his local small engine guy and he is very happy with it too. From what he says it was competively priced. I think he got the saw, couple chains and extra bar for around 600.
