O.T. Voltage spike?

I know this is off-topic, but some of you guys seem to know about electricity...
I have a dual heat furnace; I have a an electric plenum unit in my gas furnace (I heat with electric until the power company shuts me off, temporarily, when they experience a peak load on 'ripple control' and then the gas takes over until the peak load period passes).
Anyway, last night was about 20 below at 2:00am and the electric unit was running normally... all of a sudden I heard a loud "clunk" from the furnace and at the same time the touch control lamp (turns off and on just by touching it) on my wifes bedside table came on... I figured she must have bumped the lamp or something, but I suspected the "clunk" noise and the light coming on were related... they were - it happened 2 more times about an hour apart... (of course, I lay there awake all night waiting for it to happen again). It also happened once when the furnace was off - just the lamp came on by itself. The power company did get a peak load about 6:30am and the gas furnace took over as usual, so everything still works fine, but I am puzzled by the clunks and the light coming on by itself.
I suspect voltage spikes...or maybe the opposite... anybody have an opinion?

I can't help with your furnace question, but I've got one of those touch lamps and it does the same thing. Used to turn on when I would turn my fan on.
