Block and Tackle, Chain Wench

I need to get a chain wench/pulley that I can attach to the steel span in my garage to lift up riding lawn mowers and maybe, occasionally support an engine. Who makes a quality wench? Are the ones sold by Harbor Freight worth looking at? My experience is that I don't trust their tools to work.

Thanks.

cant say about harbor freight's hoist quality. coffing makes some real nice equipment, i have a couple of their block and tackles and chain hoists. if you lift something heavy, why risk a fall with an inexpensive hoist.
coffing hoists

I use one of those ratcheting cable come-alongs, with the hook on each end. It seems to be ok for light work, such as lawn tractors or the engines in them. I've had it for 30 some years, and it has never slipped or broken.
for lifting heavier things, a Coffing (Trade name) is about the best, although a regular chain or cable hoist set will do the job. If hung from a ceiling joist, etc

Jet brand sold through wholesale tool is good. CM sold through northern tool and supply is also good. look for something made in the USA. and top quality commercial/industrial equipment will be ANSI or OSHA approved and will say so

You might check second hand tool shops, I picked up a good older US made unit (works great) for $35.00 My chain hoist is real handy removing engs.lifting generator etc. Before using cleaned, painted and lubed, makes a very nice addition to any shop.

My Dad picked up a small chain falls at a cummins sale a few years ago. It's lite weight ( under 10 lbs.) and will life and hold up to 1'000 lbs. He uses it a lot as he works in the cemetery, repairing and straightening grave stones.
The ratchet type won't work because you need to hold the stones just rite for the epoxy to set up.
I think he paid about $25.00 for them.
With the chain falls - a crow bar - 10' tri-pod and a lot of blocking he has lifted and moved some unbelievable things.

I now realize the error of my ways, winch, not wench. More to the point, what are the American brands for this or for a free-standing engine hoist?

Thanks.

I would trust a Chinese cable more than a Chinese chain. So go to Kmart and buy the 20-30 dollar comealong. When I was a kid I sent to JC Whitney for an "engine hoist". When it came you could hold it in one hand .It had 1/4 inch maybe smaller nylon rope.Weird thing was it actually worked to lift motors because it went around six pulleys total.I see lots of block and tackles at yard sales. They come in handy.

I bought a Warn Pullzall, available either in 110 or battery powered. It's essentially a 1000 lb. capacity electric come-along that can safely be used as a hoist. The cable is only 15' long, that may be too short for you.

I need to get me a wench too. The Missus won't like it though. If you find one big enough to pull an engine, treat her right, she might do some harm to you if she gets mad. Just had to be a smart atch

I bought a 1 ton rated chain hoist at Harbor Freight. It works OK for me and only cost about $50 or $60. I would not overload it much though. Good luck!

Greetings from Osan AB, ROK, Do you still have that GREAT Bakery/Kolache Shop there in Snook? Is Ella's Place still there? It's been many years since I was in Snook, and sure could enjoy some of those Kolache's with my coffee in the morning.

Try Northern Tool or ATS on line. You should be able to find a whinch or hoist like you are lookng for.

You are "old school" to mention Ella's place. Anyhow, her burgers and beer shop closed down fifteen years ago when she got old and developed Alzheimers. The building along with Lawrence's store is gone because the local bank bought the property; the old building were decaying anyways. We had two bakeries, but you can still get the kolaches made by Lydia Mae Faust most days of the week. I get them normally once a week or sometimes once every two weeks. Since you last viewed Snook, we have gained about 100 people to a burgeoning population of 600. We still have no stop light or police.

Thanks for your advice
