Plastic repair KISS

Hey folks,
Is there an idiot proof (IR1 sometimes) way of repairing the plastic fenders on my ATV that I can make look halfway decent (not necessarily pretty). I'm dealing with a couple of cracks, but one fender has a chunk gone out of it. Temps here are right at freezing (+/- a degree or two).

Thanks, Dave

I have done this two ways:

Drill holes on either side of the crack and use zip (wire ties) to stitch it together. Kinda looks like surgical stitches when finished.

Take a small propane torch a warm the plastic on each side (be careful, too much heat and the plastic melts/burns, then use a broad tipped soldering iron in circles to push & melt the 2 sides together. Practice on the back side of the fender, when you get the technique perfected do the front. Once the plastic has cooled it can be sanded and buffed to improve appearance.

Good Luck

I have used the wire tie method like Harvesterguy said and had good luck with it. Drill a small hole at each end of the crack and that will help keep it from cracking more. Not real pretty but it looks as good as anything else on my old 4 wheeler.

I've cut out a plastic "patch" and place under the boo boo, and then pop rivet. you can get colored rivets or hand paint to blend... I think its a strong repair too.. Worked good to repair a cracked plastic bezel on my john deere 112...

Yes, but sadly it's not idiot proof or cheap. If your willing to spend a couple buck and hours buy a hot air plastic welder from Harbor Freight. If not find a automotive bumper exchange. They can fix it eazy but are greedy.

Cut up a plastic 5 gal bucket, either use the hole strip for new fenders are as patch panels. Pop rivets with washes will nail it down

I've used short metal straps. Center them over the crack and drill the holes. Space them as necessary along the crack. Then use pan head screws with washers (if needed)and then the strap goes underneath with a washer and nylock nut. I did this with a plastic bumper cover and it had to hold up the weight of the cover and light on a front corner.

That is basically a soldering iron.

I had my car in the body shop today. He pulled a panel loose and a plastic bracket broke off with the clip. He tried super glue but ended up heating up the tip of his screwdriver with a small butane torch and then melted the bracket back on with the screwdriver. Reheated the screwdriver when it wouldn't melt plastic anymore.
