Grindstone question

Why is it that after considerable use- -not abuse- - of a grindstone that it becomes out-of-round? And needs to be trued up?

There are MANY grades of grind stone. THe stone you need depends on what you are using it for. I sharpen alot of lawn mower blade. At one time I went through almost as many stones as mower blade that I sharpened. I finally found a VERY EXPENSIVE stone called a snagging stone I think. It is VERY COUASE and VERY HARD. I now have a stone that last years instead of a couple of months.

You aren't holding what you grind or sharpen steady makes the stone out of round. Use a dressing stone or dresser with star shaped wheels to get it round again and have a fresh cutting surface again too. You might find any old stones you saved can be dressed up and used again or cut for grinding certain shapes. I take worn down stones off my 8" grinder and dress again putting them on my 6" grinder.

Sometimes it just happens. You need to get a wheel dresser to dress the wheel again to make it round and clean it up. Most new wheels don't spin 100% true when you install them so you hit them with the dresser.

On some, if not all, grinding wheels, your not supposed to touch the grinding wheel with your bare hands. I know wheels that are used for precision sharpening, this is true. Dave
