Fairbanks Morse

Recently bought a Fairbanks Morse Z 3 hp governed flywheel engine.

Bought it sight unseen, looks complete and supposedly ran. It is free and has good compression, but the main bearings are very loose.

I started tearing it down, clean inside, bore looks good, the crank looks good and the bearings are insert type, at least the top is I haven't got the crank out yet.

Does anyone know how to identify this engine? The serial number is K419356. I have checked the FM serial number look up and it shows this to be a very old motor, but every thing else about it says it is one of the newer models.

I see some were made by other companies and some were made in Ohio and Mexico. I haven't seen anything about Mexico on it and the brass tag says Fairbanks Morse, USA, and it is an 800 RPM engine. Being it has the FM tag, is it safe to assume it is a FM motor? Always a possibility the water hopper was changed, but it all looks to be the same patina.

Any idea about the serial number? I see some say KC for Kansas City, or C for Canada, but this is just K.

Thanks!
