Help with a Wisconsin MVH4D starter

I have a 1967 MVH4D engine on a OMC skid steer. The way I understand it the engine rotates clockwise when viewed from the flywheel side. The starter (maybe a Prestolite 46-911, MBG 4141?) looks like it has been with the engine for awhile but wouldn't turn, so I removed it and cleaned it. It turns fine now but the bendix (inertia) won't kick out. The starter turns clockwise when viewed form the snout/gear side.

The Questions..... Shouldn't the starter turn counterclockwise? Counterclockwise starter would equal clockwise engine, Correct?

Is this the correct starter for the engine or should it be one with a bendix on the outside like the second one below? Does it matter?

Would my starter (no tags) be 6v or 12v?

Both starters below say they fit the VH4D, is (military) MVH4D Different?

What the starter on the engine looks like. Note it says counterclockwise with 10 teeth

Maybe it should be? Note it says counterwise with 10 teeth

Thanks for any help

It is possible that when you cleaned/repaired the starter you got the relative location between the "belly" of the starter and the endplate that holds the brushes "off" by 90, which would reverse the rotation of the starter.

Bob

Thank you

I took the end cap off turned it 90, reinstalled it.

Jumped it with a battery and it took off counterclockwise kicking the bendix out as it should.

(quoted from post at 11:56:57 05/27/19) Bob, absolutely brilliant answer.

Being in my 6th decade, I have seen many "strange things" that can happen to mechanical and electrical equipment. ;-)

Oh, yeah, and CAUSED a few, as well!
