Gas tank build

I know I'm crazy, but I want to try and build a tank for the underside of an engine. Given that it won't be seen, figured it would be a good practice. I'm going to get galvanized metal from a sheet metal shop. What gauge should I be looking for?

Thanks.

I would not go less than 16 gauge my self but what you buy are prolly 18 to 20 ga. Are you braising the joints, inlet, outlet and drain plug? Let us know how it works out. I may want one. If you have the equipment I'm sure it will be cheaper. Most of the ones on eBay are 75. To 100.00. I made one the other day for my antique Kohler Generator and I used a freon tank. I cut it down about 4" and welder it back together. Turned out pretty good. Larry

I made this tank when I built the tractor, had to have the step to go around alternator, holds 8 gallon. I just used 16 ga cold roll no galvanize, mig welded and put in neck and cap from old pickup cab. Looks inside like I just made it no rust and that was 35 years ago.

Planning on soldering them just like they were originally. I'll post pics as I go and when I'm done.
