I just hauled home a nice 6 HP Witte and want to put it to work driving a 12" Witte centrifugal pump.(Never got around to hooking it up to the 3 HP Lister) The pump as a 4" wide by 4" diameter flat belt pulley. The engine has no drive pulley mounted. What would be the recommended diameter for a driver?

Rig up a temporary pulley on the engine, even a simple v-pulley and belt SHOULD drive the pump temporarily, and see how it "behaves" doing whatever type of demonstration you want to do.

Once you try a drive ratio or two and know what works, you can start looking for a nice "period-correct" flat pulley for your permanent "display".

I don't know what speed the engine is capable of/what speed you want to run it, but I'm gonna GUESS you will need to run the pump at least twice engine speed (if not faster) if you expecting it to paddle much water around.

Thanks Bob--good idea. Not going to be a show piece though. This guy is going to do some real work pumping irrigation water. Not a lot, just for a couple of acres--also want to make the local water commissioner (water cop) scratch is head a mite! Don't worry, not going to overload a rare antique. Its in great shape, bearings are tight, great compression, easily capable of running a few hours a week.

I'd love to see it run, they are a well-designed long life engine!

Post back when you make a try at this, please!
