What are these Wisconsin VG4D electrical parts?

The air shroud has two electrical devices mounted to it. What are they? Pictures below.

I removed the engine from the skidsteer and am running the engine with a bare bones electrical system -- ground to battery negative, coil to battery positive.
The engine is running just fine without these devices being attached.

The skidsteer has a couple of broken gauges. I don't know if these devices are associated with the hour meter, or are part of something important.

Congratulations, you have discovered the rectifier and the voltage regulator for the "flywheel alternator", in other words, the battery charging system.

My skid steer originally has charge system like yours but was re engined with an engine that did not have a charge system. I put a Delco 10si with three wire hook up on mine and mounted the Alt. to frame . Alt runs backwards from original but it does not care. I did use a fan off a Corvair as they run backwards too.
Drive pulley on by cooling fan is quite small so as not to obstruct air flow but it kicks in and charges just fine.

Can I assume that since these two parts are not currently in the circuit that no battery charging is currently happening? The alternative is that unregulated voltage is going to the battery.

The "flywheel alternator" produces AC voltage, and can't charge the battery directly, it needs to be rectified.

Unless someone has cobbled up some alternative system, without the rectifier being connected up, NO battery charging can be going on.
 
There were two versions of the flywheel alternator, 5 amp and 15 amp.

Usually works pretty well; as long as you don?t reverse the polarity.
 
There appears to be 4 wires coming from the stator. All are covered in a thick coat of yellow paint. It appears that one of the wires is red underneath the red paint.

I think that this is likely my system. How do I know which two wires go to the Rectifier and which two go to the regulator?

Is it possible to buy a modern combined rectifier/regulator that fits a kohler or briggs engine and use this in place of these very old components?
 
Manual sure doesn't help with that... just says the connectors are "foolproof"/will only connect one way, NOT much help if the wires are cut!

I have wondered about using a little more modern regulator, as well.

I suspect that could be done, wish I had access to one of the stators (or a complete running engine) to do a few electrical checks on, but I have none around at the current time.
