Mag stopped

Took a JD 1 1/2 to a show this weekend and it ran great for several hours, then just stopped. Never could get it to run again. Played around with it yesterday and decided it was the mag. Took the cover off, everything looked good and clean. Put it all back together, had spark. Cranked it a couple times, engine fired once then nothing again, no spark. I could repeat the process again (remove cover, etc) and get the same results (one fire) several times. Ideas or suggestions on what to do with it?

On a JD "E" magneto one thing comes to mind with the scenario you are describing. You mention taking a cover off. What cover are you talking about? One thing that can give a fit is the brush that is in the back cover. That is the one that faces the flywheel (the back end of the magneto). I have seen quite a few that the brush that is in there stick in position, and in return, killing any chance of electrical current. That would be the first thing I would check. Just take the 4 screws out that hold the back cover on the mag and see if the brush moves in and out freely. If not then that is most likely your main issue. Outside of that, it is more difficult to diagnose the true issue you are having.

Good luck and have fun...
