IH 454 Radiator Plan D Success

Hello all,

As promised, this is the update of my Plan D to use a random radiator for my 454 tractor as the proper radiator does not seem to be available anywhere.

I installed a like sized radiator, a Ford Mustang radiator, from Amazon. Cost was a very affordable $127. Right now everything is zip tied but installation was all of 30 minutes. I haven't installed the shroud yet, still checking temps to see if I need it.

The outlet needed a 1.5 to 1.75 adapter to fit the original hose but that is available on Amazon as well.

The motor cowl will fit just fine but will have to be removed to add water to the radiator, but now I have a working tractor as I gradually restore it.

Nothing wrong with doing what you have to
do to get it done. If you have a shroud I
would put it on. You won't know you really
need it until you're working it hard.
 
Looks like a good start!

And if you can mount the shroud, do it. You'll need it under real working conditions when the grass is
flying and the load is heavy.

As for the mount, be sure nothing is touching the tanks or tube area. Vibration will eventually take its
toll. When mounted be sure there is no twist or stress on the radiator, sitting or working. Sometimes
things flex under load. Mounting on rubber pads or straps is better than solid and ridged.
 
I plan to mount the radiator with little squares of old radiator hose. The original stuff sort of looked like that. I notice it does shake a lot.

Temps are higher than I like, rising to 80% of the original gauge, so yes, I will need to mount the shroud for sure.

It's hard to please the tractor Gods though, after 30 minutes of blade work the water pump blew the front seal. That's ok though, I wanted an excuse to paint that fan blade.

No brakes either, but I heard IH tractors have a reputation for brake problems after sitting up for a while.
