Oil Leak on my Massey Harris 20

I'm just wondering if I am biting off more than I can chew by trying to stop the oil leak coming from my pan gasket? I
bought the right gasket ( so I think) and it looks pretty straight forward. My question is this. Do I need to worry
about the front and rear seal when doing the pan gasket? I really don't want to pull the whole bottom end of my tractor
off if I don't have to.

Does your engine have the bottom rear main seals in a potmetal housing, bolted to the bottom of the block? If so, your pan gasket fits under part of that housings, but you can cut around it and use gasket maker liberally at the joints to seal it up. But, do you know your main seals are not leaking too? Might be best to do the whole job. steve

Here's the rear main seal holder off an F162, sitting on the bellhousing adapter plate. Same design as the F 140 and F124. If the end of your oil pan side gasket looks like the same profile, it's supposed to go under this part. Same with the one at the front. Which means you should most definitely change out the rear main seal, which is a 2-part rope seal. If you don't have a manual, email me and I can step you through it. steve

Mike, this isn't a terribly hard job. The rear seal holder is designed to unbolt off the bottom of the block, and then wind the upper part out, once the bottom half is removed. The piece in the pic is held on by two long 1/4 inch bolts up through the bottom, and two short ones threaded into the adapter plate. The upper seal holder will turn out of the block, with a little careful help. Then there are specific directions on how to replace the rope main seals in these two halves. The front one only holds the rubber front pan gasket, but I'm pretty sure it also has to go over the top of your side gaskets. The front crank seal is in the timing cover up front, and may or may not be leaking. steve
