Guys, trying to help a friend who has a Farmall 350 utility. When he gets it started he cannot disengage the clutch. When he trys to put it i gear it just grinds the gears. If we shut off the engine we can engage a gear, when we start it, it takes off. Any suggestions as to what might be going or how we fix this problem? Thanks

Clutch is probably stuck to the flywheel. See if there is an inspection plate below the clutch. Have someone hold the pedal down and see if the clutch is stuck. If it is
simply loosen it with a screwdriver. I would look at this first.

I can only assume as hymie did that the tractor has sat and the lined clutch plate is stuck to driving surfaces. Unfortunately on those IHs the freeing a clutch plate by prying on the edge as suggested by hymie will not work because the clutch plate is in a recess in the flywheel so the edge of it cannot be accessed. Here is something to try, however fore warning it has some risks involved. Please keep in mind that with a clutch that is stuck engaged only 3 things will stop the tractor, shutting the engine off, yanking the shifter to neutral or killing the engine by applying the brakes. Hopefully you have some terrain available and an open area. One of the keys for this to work is getting the tractor moving in the highest gear possible. Fifth gear would be ideal but it takes a fairly knowledgeable operator to accomplish that, we will shoot for 4th. The reason for the terrain is the following. Get yourself a clear path, shift into first and start the engine. Drive the tractor to the top of an incline and direct it down hill. Shut off the engine, hold the brakes and shift the transmission into 4th, if the TA works move it to the lo position. Start the engine, shift the TA to direct and head to an open area and raise the engine speed to 3/4 throttle. Hold the clutch pedal down and hit both brakes hard as if you intend to slide the tires. The brake application may need repeated 8 -10 times. Hopefully this will jar the clutch plate enough to get it to release from the flywheel and or pressure plate surfaces. If not splitting the tractor and disassembling the clutch will be required. IH brakes are known to not be the greatest so this may not work in your favor. There may be a way to unbolt the clutch pressure plate and loosen it to get it unstuck without splitting the tractor. I would have to assess that in person to tell if it is possible. If it came to that I would have to walk you through those steps over the phone.
