PLAN D FOR IH 454D RADIATOR

Hi all, dumb question here.

My IH 454D radiator just doesn't have a replacement anywhere. My local radiator guy says it isn't worth a recore because the bottom bucket is shot. That's plan A & B. I am now on plan C, fixing it myself by soldering all the cracks.

But a radiator's a radiator, right? If plan C doesn't work is there any reason I can't buy a new, generic aluminum radiator with an electric fan and the same cooling capacity and with universal water hoses mount it under the cowl? I have to retrofit a mount for the oil cooler, but that should be doable as well.

Would it work until I could find an actual replacement radiator?

I was able to find a generic radiator in the Summit catalog that was pretty close to
my Oliver 1850. I had mounts tigged to the radiator to match the original mounts. It
seems to work fine, but I do not run it hard for long periods of time.

Firstly an electric fan for your tractor is not a good idea

The radiator in picture is worn out not worth try to solder

The correct radiator must be fitted as oil cooler and side
panels fit onto it

I know someone who purchased new radiator for his IH
tractor from outside firm and it would not fit so be careful

Here in uk I believe radiators can be reconditioned
cheaper than across the pond l

Thats about it

You can keep your original fan and shroud. It will probably move more air
and be tougher than electric fans.

Be careful mounting the aluminum and plastic radiator, they don't like
twisting, stressing, and vibration. Try to make the mounts from rubber
saddles, straps, something to isolate it.

The 454 radiator has a long filler neck to clear bonnet
would a new aluminium rad have this also the filler is on
top

You would go to a fair bit of trouble getting radiator to fit

and it might not work after and the new radiator would be

Scrap

You might even ruin the engine

Hello Brady welcome to YT! The parent company of YT
All States Ag Parts shows they have one available. It
says it is ..reconditioned.. so you will have to find out
what that means. It also says not available on line so
not sure what that means either if it needs picked up at
one of their stores or what. Maybe the $400 is to
much, I would think it should have a new core for that
price.
The IH PN for North American diesel with a synchro
shift trans radiator is 539563R1.
ASAP reconditioned radiator

When they say not available online it means they dont have one, but theyll try to locate one and put you on call list if and when they find one

As a follow up, I called All State Ag Parts. It seems there is a different radiator for my diesel 454, #402193R1. Looks like they don't have one and don't expect any.

If I go for Plan D I will post the results.

Thanks for the help, all!
