Carter UT 2612S Carburetor Question

Hi,

I'm trying to overhaul a Carter UT carburetor. It appears to be a 2612s and I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this carburetor? Specifically, I am puzzled about the high-speed needle assembly.
I removed the needle screw and its nut. Behind it was fibrous bushing. In the literature it is described as the main metering screw packing. What is this? It seems to be nearly worn away in my
carburetor. Is there any replacement or alternative for it? Also, is the metering jet behind it removable?

I probably cannot help you, but it is a beautiful and helpful thing when you give all the info like what machine this is off of. Often if it is off a certain brand of tractor posting in that brands forum usually gets more info for you.

The packing is there for 2 purposes, to seal around the screw to keep it from leaking gas (if it is on the bottom of the bowl). It also puts some tension on the screw so it can't move from vibration.

The original material was graphite impregnated string. You might find some at a real plumbing supply, or just twist up some Teflon tape and add to what you already have. Keep adding until the leak stops and the screw binds slightly. You want this to happen before the packing nut is bottomed.

As for the jet, if it has a screw driver slot it is removable. Sometimes they need a little heat (only on a cast iron carb). If the slot is rounded out, it may have to be drilled out, or just thoroughly cleaned with a torch tip cleaner, and leave well enough alone.

Okay, thanks. That's a big help. I'll have a look around and see if I can find some of the graphite impregnated string. I bet it also served as a lubricant for the needle.
