Diagnosing Engine Dusting

Hello,

I was wondering if you guys had any advise on what to check to determine if an engine is dusted. Relatively new to the tractor engine world and was told I have a dusted engine. What are things to look at to confirm this? Apologies in advance if this is a novice question, just looking for guidance.

Thank you!

(quoted from post at 18:15:34 09/07/23) I'm not familier with what you mean by 'dusted'. What are the symptoms or problems it has and does it run?

A leak somewhere on the intake system allowing dirty air into the engine = dusted.

Yep caused by air intake leak letting dirty air into the
engine. Do a compression test.

Maybe late to the party but, the ..diagnosis.. would be excessive crankcase blow-by, unacceptable oil use and low power. Low numbers from a compression test would be a way to confirm there is a problem with the engine. Dirt appearing anywhere in the engine air intake past the air filter would confirm the that ..dusting.. has taken place. When the engine is tore down the cylinder wear will be abnormally high for the amount of hours on the engine. The same will be true of the pistons and in particular the rings and ring grooves of the pistons.

One of the easiest ways to tell a turbo charged engine has been dusted is to pull the intake air tube off the front of the turbo and look at the vanes on the front of the wheel
If the engine has been dusted the inducer wheel is the first thing the dirty air comes in contact with, a dusted inducer wheel will look like it s been sand blasted with the edges of the vanes being rough and pitted with the edges of the vanes rounded over
An undusted turbo wheel will be clean and shiny with sharp edges on the ends of the vanes
The exception is if the turbo has been replaced but replacement turbos are normally not pained making it easy to tell that is has been replaced.
