MF40 transmission linkages

I have a Massey Fergusson 40 tractor, mid 1970's, with the semi-automatic quick reverse mechanism - hence separate forward and reverse pedals. Initially it worked fine, but after a while would only go in reverse and now won't move forward or back using the foot pedals. I found that the external linkages from the foot pedals to the side of the torque convertor housing were worn, to the point that the lever at the top which actuates the hydraulic valves (I guess) does not move far enough to engage. I tried taking the slop out of the linkages (using fishing line!) but it still won't engage. But if I move the aforementioned lever far enough by hand it does engage. so there is not a problem with the torque converter itself. Any clues? Could it be there is a part missing? I am considering fitting a hand opening rod to the lever mentioned, but that is not a very safe option when operating on hills. Am I missing something?

Hello Jim welcome to YT. Just dropping a quick note
here to acknowledge your post. I hopefully will have
more time to address your questions later this evening.
Meanwhile I will say I did have a bit of a chuckle from
your comment about using fishing line to ..stop gap..
your problem. Something a little more substantial will
need to take place to solve your problem.

Thanks. Part of the issue is that this has an (original) front end loader attached, so it is very hard to get at the linkages. Otherwise I would just pull them off and re-bush. There also seems to be quite a bit of slop in the shaft where is goes into the valve housing. Can that be pulled off from the outside and shimmed?

Welcome

It sounds like you already know the answer and it is not an easy one. The linkage needs to be bushed and pins replaced to remove the play in those items. Without seeing it and looking at a manual, I am guessing the answer to your question on the shaft going into the valve housing is no you can't remove and fix it from the outside, unless you actually see an external release, something has to hold it in place.

If you don't have one you should get a service manual for your machine. You can use the online AGCO parts books at

Also, you might try posting about this on the Massey Harris & Massey Ferguson Forum a bit further down the index from this forum. Some of the MF guys more knowledgeable in that transmission setup might have missed your post up here. Here is a link to that forum.
