Have a ford 600 that ran fine until the other day when she puked out. Now it turns over fine but won't fire until after letting off the ignition/starter button. Was told to put an ignition coil on it but that did nothing. Any ideas?

Hello Bhart welcome to YT! Did you look at the points?
Here is the thing I like to point out. On a forum the
answers you get are based solely on the information
and descriptions you provide. You were there when the
tractor ..puked out.. as you call it, we are on this end
are just seeing the words you type. So a little better
description of the fateful moment could be helpful.
Other than the change in how it is starting any other
time is seems to run fine?
Just for future reference there is a Ford Forum section
on this forums devoted to that brand. In the future I
would suggest you post questions about your tractor
there. See link.

Stopped running as if the key was turned off or did it sputter? What about the points and does it run fine once it starts after you let off the starter button? We are relying on your information to give answers to help you.

It was running fine for about 5 mins then just stopped all at once. No sputter no nothing just dead. I check all fuel delivery from tank to carb. Good. Pull plug and only have spark after releasing the starter button, and even then it just fires a few cylinders then nothing. No start. sputters after release of button, for lack of a better term.

Still did you check the points? The points my be burned up and near the end of useful life. When you quit cranking the battery voltage jumps up allowing the ignition a better opportunity to fire. This does not really answer why you say it stops almost immediately. Did you check the gas out of the carb drain? That is the important place to check it. The gas has to get inside the carb for the engine to burn it. Mainly say this because the fitting that the fuel line connects to that screws in the carb may have a fine screen on it that can plug up, see link. It has to be pulled out for cleaning. However your problem does not sound like it is cause by lack of fuel delivery. Ignition condensers can also cause problems.

Points are no longer. Previous owner went electronic ignition long ago. I did clean from the tank to the carb but to no avail. The screen you spoke of was clear this time around.

Is the coil the proper one for the electronic ignition? I know the Petronix brand requires a specific range of ohms for the primary circuit of the coil. Also is there a resistor for the coil? If so the EI module has a feed wire that requires 12 volts. If that is on the terminal after the resistor the unit may not be getting enough voltage. If you have a Petronix brand then all the specs should be available online. You will need to look it up by your module number.

So I put it back to points and condenser and the ole girl fired right back up. Actually runs better than it did with the electric set up.
