How to convert Wisconsin VF4 engine from 6 volts to 12 v

My father built a log splitter over 40 years ago using a Wisconsin Air Cooled Heavy Duty VF4 engine. My son and I are trying to bring this back to life after an off friend of my father said he had it in his woods just sitting. Anyway is there a way to convert this from a 6 volt to a 12 volt system without spending a lot of money?

Does it have magneto or battery ignition?

If a mag, NO changes would need to be made to the ignition, if a distributor, a primary resistor could be added or a ''true'' 12 Volt coil.

Most had a gear-driven generator, which would pose a problem IF battery charging is needed.

A small belt-drive alternator cold be added.

The starter will work just fine on 12 Volts.

As wore out said very likely magneto
ignition thus no changes needed there. If
it has a mag and has a generator then
unhook any wires from the the generator
and the regulator and insulate the wires
with tape. Install 12V battery and start
it up. If it starts easy a group 24
battery will probably start it 50 times.
Put it on a charger now and then. However
if you need or want a charging system then
add a 10SI Delco, very simple to wire up.
