I have 1960 john deere 440 that seems to only have one forward gear one does nothing and 4 want to try and go in reverse.any thoughts?

Hello Chuckie welcome to YT! I am an IH guy but It
sounds to me like it was shifted out of reverse but the
internal shifter came out of position so it is staying in
reverse. When you say it tries to reverse in other gears
does the engine pull down and you only get a slight
movement? If so this supports my theory, obviously the
transmission cannot operate in a reverse and forward
gear at the same time. This happens to old letter series
Farmalls quite often. On them you pull the gear shift
out align the shifter notches of the internal shift forks,
put the shifter back in and go on. Not sure if this is
what will fix yours. Hopefully a JD guy will stop by and
clear this up.

Is the gear that works 1st gear? If you put it in that gear and go and apply the brakes hard does it pull the engine down or does the machine just stop? If it stops you have taken out the clutch. Check the clutch adjustment does it have free play?

Just bought it at an auction dont know much about but I believe it is 2nd gear that works.a applying the brake does not pull the engine down as for the clutch adjustment I would have no clue think I am in over my head

So you are saying you put it in the gear you said that still worked let the clutch up applied the brakes as suggested and the tractor stopped moving and engine kept running? If so the clutch is out? There is a slight possibility that an adjustment may fix it but not to likely. So the tractor is new to you and you have basically used it very little? What were you doing with the tractor when this happened?

What 440? 440 industrial wheel tractor? 440 Crawler? Gas or diesel? Reverser or no reverser? Or something else, JD used 440 for a number of things.

Did you buy it as needing repairs or was it supposed to be all working? Does it have a reverser (lever on the left side of the dash cowl above the clutch pedal)? If it has a reverser the lever must be snapped into the full forward position for forward and snapped to the rear for reverse.

To help you when looking for parts and info. If it is gas, it is called a 440I and if it is a diesel, it is a 440ID.

I take it the reverser was not engaged. Use the clutch with that reverser. Do not use reverse in the reverser and transmission reverse to make a forward gear. Parts are not easy to come by. Get the operator's manual at least.
