Deere 140 h3 repower

I want to repower a JD 140 H3 (1973 or 1974) with a briggs Vanguard i acquired. It is pull start only.

I was thinking i only want to plow and not use the pto. I would like to keep it simple and do a pull start only.

My question is:
Is the hydro directional? Can I run the drive shaft in reverse and have it still work?

S the other poster said the hydro IS directional because of the charge pump and lubrication channels in the pump commutator plate.

A Chinese starter won't cost you much, and if no ring gear on the flywheel you should be able to find another on ebay reasonably.

Vanguards make a nice running 140, I have done several.

As the Briggs crankshaft is higher from the mounting base than the original engine I replace the steel disc driveshaft couplers with U-joints.
