Ford 8n starter gear gone

I went to replace the starter and the gear that engages the ring gear is gone. Presumably in pieces inside the housing. Tractor was running without noise or indications of trouble when I parked it. Trying to fish out the parts with a magnetic tool but dont find anything. Thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Lots of guys simply leave the pieces "down in the basement" and install a new starter drive and put the tractor back to use.

On the other hand, there have been a FEW reports where that didn't work out well, and they get in harm's way and break the bellhousing.

Personally, I'd feel better with the broken parts removed.

If you can't find them with a magnet the alternatives are to remove the steering gear and access them from the top or to split the tractor.

When Ford made the N series tractors they where built with lots of room in the bell housing so if the starter drive fell off it would not hurt a thing to leave it in there

I would have to pull the starter and put a whole bunch of rare earth magnets on the flywheel in one area. Rotate it around and see if you pick up your fragments

Was there last weekend fixing my dad's 8n.

Good thing I did as half of the starter
gear was wedged between the flywheel ring
gear and the bell housing. Also, youbcould
see spots where the broken gear hit the
bell housing.

It took me about 3 hours, but I wasn't
huffing it. Took lots of breaks.

Won't hurt anything to leave it. Got a
starter gear down in my Ford 640...
Hundreds of hours of use. No problem.

I agree that they are usually just left there. Now and then someone will post here about what are these parts that they found in the bell housing?
